A One-Company Woman, Ann M. Livermore Sticks With HP!
In the rapidly-changing corporate world, corporate loyalty is an exceptionally valuable commodity. As a matter of basic business practices, loyalty is what a major company buys when they contract a worker. The contract is, in part, a covenant not to use your talents for a competitor while you are being compensated by the contracting company. Some people, however, do not need the contractual binding to illustrate real loyalty to a company. One such individual who has proven herself time and time again to Hewlett-Packard is Ann M. Livermore.
Ann M. Livermore serves on the Board of Directors of Hewlett-Packard and has, at various points, been strongly considered to become CEO of the company. Despite being passed over, Livermore has remained with HP for thirty years and she shows no signs of leaving now! Ann M. Livermore has systematically risen through the ranks of Hewlett-Packard and the only business she has been affiliated with outside HP is UPS. Since 1997, Ann M. Livermore has served on the Board of Directors of United Parcel Service.
Ambitious from her youth, Ann M. Livermore excelled at school. Growing up in North Carolina, she applied herself and was valedictorian of her high school graduating class. She did not go far for her undergraduate work; Livermore enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A part of the prestigious Morehead Scholarship program, Ann M. Livermore earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics. From there, Livermore went to the West Coast to attend Stanford University. In 1982, Ann M. Livermore earned her Master of Business Administration degree.
Armed with her M.B.A., Ann M. Livermore went directly to Hewlett-Packard for employment. Like many HP employees, Livermore began her career with the company in a sales position. Seeing she had vast potential for quite a bit more, the management at Hewlett-Packard rapidly promoted her through positions in sales, marketing, and research and development. Only thirteen years after starting work for Hewlett-Packard, Ann M. Livermore was elected to a position as a Corporate Vice President!
At every point since the 1999 resignation of CEO Lewis Platt, Ann M. Livermore has been a serious contender to be elected the next Chief Executive Officer. Part of what made her such a viable leader for the company in 1999 was Livermore’s leadership role in steering the company toward E-services, as opposed to keeping the company focused on hardware. Since 1999, Ann M. Livermore has led some of HP’s most profitable divisions, like the Technology Solutions Group. In 2011, Livermore gave up the HP Enterprise Business Division and was elected immediately to the company’s Board of Directors.
It is hard to think of any corporate executive at Hewlett-Packard who has given so much, for so long, as Ann M. Livermore.
