Computers truly have become integrated in virtually every aspect of life and work in the United States. GardenWorks is a CD-based software program produced by GardenSoft.  The current incarnation of GardenWorks runs on all Windows systems and requires you to have 1 GB of free space on your hard drive.  GardenWorks installs easily, though you must have a CD-ROM drive; GardenSoft does not make a digital-only version of the software available.  Windows is easily able to read and install the software directly to your hard drive.

The GardenWorks program provides you with hundreds of images and layouts of professional gardens for both inspiration and planning your own garden.  The software includes tips on how and where to plant each type of plant in its database, as well as tips on overall garden design.  The graphic-intensive program not only gives you tips, it has tools and garden elements – like different fences, walkways, and gates – that you may add to photographs of your own yard or garden in order to accurately predict exactly how certain changes will work on your own property.

The real selling point of the GardenWorks software is the exceptionally-detailed database of plants for your garden.  Currently, the database focuses on plants found in Northern California, but GardenSoft is constantly expanding its database.  Moreover, the vast majority of the plants found in the GardenWorks database thrive throughout the United States, especially when they are well-tended by a caring gardener.  The database of plants is easily-searchable using the GardenWorks software’s robust search engine.  The plant listings are augmented by photographs of over 700 gardens from Northern California. 

The GardenWorks software is easy to install, useful in planning your garden, and fun to browse through, making it a welcome blend of nature and technology!
