Magisto Wants to Do For Movies What Instagram Did for Photos
When Instagram launched in 2010, it changed the way many people approached mobile photography. While anyone could snap pictures just for themselves and their close friends to see, Instagram offered users a simplified way to make artistic-looking photos that people wanted to share publicly. Instagram’s filters gave people a sense of performance when taking and uploading their pictures and allowed many people without photo editing skills to feel like pros with their smartphone camera. Magisto is a smartphone app that wants to recreate this experience on mobile, but this time for video rather than photography. Magisto is a cool product that lets you upload your mobile videos to its app and choose a “theme” to apply to them. Each theme dictates an automated editing process, which gives your video a more artistic look. Themes add different visual filters to your video, not unlike Instagram does with photos, but also actually edits the video itself to make it more dynamic. Those who have have trouble recording videos with their mobile devices can get smartphone IT support to help them with their camera.
Other companies have tried to make headway in social video space as well. Vine, owned by Twitter, and Instagram itself both have video services. However, these services use brevity as their key distinguishing feature. Vine videos are only six seconds long while Instagram videos only last fifteen. This approach is similar to Twitter’s method of keeping posts to 140 characters. Magisto takes an alternative approach. It attempts to drive the social aspect of its users’ videos through convenience and a concept of social performance rather than constructed brevity. The cool effects and interesting visuals that come from Magisto’s themes are what the startup believes will drive users to share their videos and therefore spread word about the app. In theory, this should lead to organic growth for Magisto.
Magisto integrates with several different social networking and social sharing apps and services. You can share your videos through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google+ directly from the app. Currently, Magisto is available for both Android devices and the iPhone. Users who have usability issues with the app should seek Apple support or Android tech support depending on which device they own.
