2U CEO Chip Paucek Helps Universities Institute Online Degree Programs

Many education-based tech startups are trying to offer online courses and content directly to students through their own brand and website.  While these companies do occasionally collaborate with certain universities for course content, 2U CEO Chip Paucek is a cool person in technology believes in a different path for online education. Paucek wants to provide universities the tools and resources they need to create their own online degree programs.  Rather than offer online education directly, 2U works with schools to help them provide online classes and degrees to their students through a university’s own site and with a school’s own branding.   Paucek and his company concern themselves with forming complete courses and programs that fit into a genuine degree track rather than offering piecemeal educational content or single classes.  Paucek wants to help colleges utilize online classes to increase their reach and produce substantive courses that are in line with a college’s traditional offerings.  Because of this, Paucek doesn’t market 2U towards the public or students, but rather at universities themselves.  2U provides both technology and consulting to help colleges integrate large-scale online programs into their infrastructure quickly and efficiently.

Universities that work with 2U have to invest heavily in technological infrastructure for their online offerings.  This necessitates that they have strong online IT support programs in place.  Paucek and his company work directly with each of their clients each step of the way in producing and running their online courses.  However, 2U and each school must share the tech support costs that come with such large undertakings.  Currently, major institutions such as the University of Southern California and Georgetown University are among 2U’s clients.

This is not Chip Paucek’s first time building a startup or working the field of education.  After receiving a degree in political communication from The George Washington University in 1992, Paucek spent ten years building and running the Cerebellum Corporation.  Cerebellum was responsible for educational video programming for children.  After leaving Cerebellum in 2003, Paucek went on to work as the president of Educate Products and Media and eventually as the CEO of Smarterville Inc., who produce the Hooked on Phonics program for children.  Finally, in 2008, Paucek took his first steps in the tech industry by founding 2U and working as its COO.  He transitioned to the role of CEO in 2012.
