The State Of Your Cloud (New Options Are Here! Old Systems Are Revised!)
Technology, as you know, changes exceptionally fast. It seems like just last year that Cloud-based services were just appearing on the Internet! Now, Google is releasing its personal Cloud service and, in advance of that, the competitors who got the jump on Google are revising their services to remain relevant. Some of the well-established personal Cloud services may be changing the services you have come to rely upon! Some of the most significant changes are coming to the following:
Dropbox. The long-established Internet storage depot is providing greater accessibility to its users. For sharing files stored in your personal Dropbox, you may now provide links to non-Dropbox users. In order to make sharing easier, you may now directly link friends to specific files you want them to have access to. This eliminates a lot of the time and hassle of transferring large files that you have already uploaded to your Dropbox. Now, you just need to send a link to share!
Microsoft SkyDrive. Microsoft is reducing its free storage space on SkyDrive to only 7 GB. While a seven gigabyte storage limit easily exceeds the free capacity offered by Dropbox, SugarSync, and Box and every other major personal Cloud service, it is a drastic step down from the service’s original 25 GB free capacity. While Microsoft claims that roughly .06% of users will be affected by this change in limit because the vast majority of SkyDrive users use seven gigabytes or less, the company neglects the possibility that consumers were saving that extra space for growth over the next several years. If that is the case, Microsoft will either have to up its limit to stay competitive or users will just have to pay for the additional capacity. SkyDrive still has exceptionally competitive rates for additional gigabytes worth of storage space.
SugarSync. While other services are offering changes to the overall service, SugarSync is focusing on reaching a greater number of people! SugarSync has launched a new application for the new iPad. By downloading the SugarSync app to your iPad, you can now access your 5 GB SugarSync personal cloud directly from your iPad. This is ideal for those who have movies and other digital programming stored on their SugarSync Cloud. Now you can see those stored items with increased clarity on your Retina display!
Google Drive is coming in days to shake up the personal Cloud market, but the entrenched services are doing a decent job of keeping themselves relevant and fresh.
