The Key To Surviving Hard Drive Crashes: Back It Up!

To prevent the inevitable computer repair that a hard drive failure demands, it is essential to develop a regular, orderly method of backing up your hard drive data.  There are many services that offer data recovery once a hard drive or data storage device fails, but prevention is the best method for keeping data safe and secure.

Hard drives, like cars, light bulbs and textbooks, are designed to fail and be replaced.  The industry of data recovery, data storage, and computer repair exists because of the planned obsolescence of the hard drive and other components.  Despite leaps forward in recent years in devices for data recovery and storage, the magnetic medium of the hard drive remains the standard in computers.  With data recovery a problem for most computer operators and computer repair coming most often as a sudden, unbudgeted expense, prevention is the best way to survive the loss of your data from hard drive failure.

Data backup and data recovery need not be hectic or time consuming.  Like everything else, data recovery and data backup become much easier when you practice it.  Data backup can be the easiest aspect of preventing loss from a hard drive crash.  After choosing your backup device, simply schedule time to have your computer perform a system backup when it impacts your usage least.  For most people, this means scheduling a backup for nighttime when you would not use your computer, like when you are asleep.

Backing up a hard drive should be done weekly, though if you change a lot of information on your computer each day – either through installing/deleting many programs or files or dealing with excessive volumes of e-mails, original content or media files – you may want to perform incremental updates daily with full updates performed once a week.  Incremental updates would only back up the changed files, which can make data recovery easy if you only lose a limited amount of material.  The data recovery becomes much easier if you do not require any computer repair, but suffer a catastrophic hard drive failure and have full backups.

Unfortunately, most users will not know how to deal with data recovery until they have a hard drive failure.  Even data recovery processes can be practiced regularly, though.  After doing a full backup, a hard drive can be formatted to allow you to practice restoring your system from your data storage device.  While this might seem nerve-wracking, the controlled data recovery attempt may be less shocking than experiencing a hard drive failure as a surprise.

The key, however, is regularity.  If you have a very stable schedule, data backup ought to become a regular part of the day or week, like brushing your teeth or getting your kids off to school.  No one wants to have to call for computer repair or go through data recovery procedures while uncertain as to how much you have lost. Regular data backup prevents the need for computer repair and provides peace of mind.
