Summer Heat can Lead to Computer Repair
Summertime brings unique computer repair problems. Overheating is the obvious computer repair culprit, but RESCUECOM’s computer support specialists caution that power surges and blackouts can also lead to computer repair.
The top heat related threats and how to combat them:
- Overheating: The most obvious problem, overheating causes a host of other issues. Today’s computers generate significant heat by themselves, so excessive external heat causes problems. If not properly cooled, computers will attempt to protect themselves by throttling back power usage, leading to computer repair issues such as sluggish performance, lock ups, and unexpected shut downs.
- The Fix: Keep your computer cool. If you have air conditioning, keep the computer in the coolest room. If you don’t have AC, RESCUECOM’s computer support experts recommend keeping at least one fan aimed directly at the computer. Household fans are fine, but a computer cooling fan is best.

- Power surges: Computer repair issues at any time of year, power surges increase in the hot summer months. Did you know that even the smallest surge, such as the one caused by your AC turning on, can cause big enough problems to necessitate computer repair?
- The Fix: A surge protector is a summertime must. RESCUECOM’s computer support specialists caution that a “power strip” is not always a surge protector. Use a UL listed surge protector to guard against even the smallest problem.
- Blackouts: An often overlooked heat related computer repair threat is data loss. Air conditioners and fans draining the power grid make summertime blackouts common. A loss of power can cause a loss of data.
- The Fix: First, save and back up regularly. RESCUECOM’s computer support specialists recommend not just backing up current projects, but also any important older files as well.
- Second, use an uninterruptable power source. A UPS functions as a generator, instantaneously restoring power in the event that the main power source is lost. Using a UPS can prevent data loss and save you from needing computer support.
It’s only early July, with hotter weather yet to come. RESCUECOM’s computer support specialists recommend taking precautions now to prevent computer repair problems later.
