Know When to Call the Pros.
If you’re reading this, chances are good that you’re sitting at a computer. Unless you happen to be a computer repair specialist, chances are also good that your idea of how that computer works is a bit vague. So what will you do if your computer malfunctions? Will you call a computer repair specialist? Could you deal with the problem with help from a computer support hotline? Or would you attempt your computer repair at home? With those questions in mind, let’s take a look at some common computer repair problems and what the average user can do about them.
1) The computer runs slowly. This is a problem that can be easily avoided through regular disk defragmentation and disk cleanup. If your computer is already running slowly, using these two tools might take a few hours, but it will usually solve the problem. If you successfully complete both of these processes and your computer is still not up to speed, consult a computer support professional.
2) Clicking or other strange noises coming from the CPU. These noises indicate a hardware problem, often with the cooling fan. Users that are uncomfortable with internal computer repair should avoid trying to fix such a problem themselves. Attempting to do the computer repair while consulting with a computer support hotline may also be impractical, since it will be necessary to remove the tower’s casing. If you are comfortable with internal computer repair, this could be a quick and easy fix. If – like the majority of users – you don’t know a CPU from a BDU, it is best to call in a computer repair professional.
3) Computer is “locked up.” When a computer will not respond to input, that computer is said to be “locked up.” This is often due to a software conflict and can be an indication that your system has contracted malware of some sort. Start by rebooting your computer, and then perform a diagnostic scan with your anti-virus software. Should the scan report negative, consult a computer support tech.
4) The Blue Screen of Death. More correctly known as a “stop error,” the Blue Screen of Death indicates a problem in the computer’s operating system. Unless you have some experience in computer repair, it would be best to leave this problem to the computer support specialists. The user should note the stop code listed at the top of the screen, as this will help the computer support personnel diagnose the problem.
It is important for the user to know which malfunctions they can handle, and which require a computer repair specialist or a computer support hotline. Clarity in this distinction will not only save you time and money, but might save you from unintentionally causing an even bigger problem.
