Internet Security: Malware Targets the Windows Registry
If you’ve ever been the victim of an Internet security attack, you’ve probably heard of the Windows registry. The registry is a prime target for the producers of malware. However, most of us have very little understanding of the registry or its connection to Internet security.
The Windows registry is the foundation of your computer. It is made up of thousands of folders called “keys” containing the basic instructions and information a computer needs to run. Because it’s so complex, most typical computer users stay clear of it.
Malware producers, on the other hand, specifically target the registry for those exact reasons. Its importance to your computer and its size make it the perfect target for their attacks on your Internet security.
Most malware alters the keys within the registry. Hackers and cyber criminals understand enough about the registry to know exactly where to place their programs to most easily compromise your Internet security, provide the most benefit to them, and do little to alert you to any problems.
Once malware is in the registry, there is little your Internet security can do. These malicious programs alter the keys of the registry to instruct Windows to provide access to the hacker and allow them to do virtually anything. Registry attacks violate your Internet security from the inside.
Some malware can use the registry to protect itself. Even if your Internet security software finds and deletes the malware, it can reinstall itself the next time you boot up.
There are some steps you can take to protect your Internet security and your registry. New malware comes online every day, so keeping your security updated is paramount. Be sure to update all your Internet security and antivirus programs regularly.
Watch your computer closely. Some malware can make changes that are easy to spot. If you notice any unauthorized changes to your computer, a new home page for example, you may have malware in your registry.
To keep your Internet security and registry from being violated, avoid less reputable web sites where malware lurks and never click on links in unsolicited email.
Many commercial registry cleaners advertize online. However, many of these programs fail and some are malware themselves. Some websites provide guides to cleaning the registry. If you’re not an exceptionally computer savvy user though, it is best to leave the registry to the professionals. Seek out computer support to avoid doing any permanent damage.
The Windows registry is a vital, but confusing part of a computer that is frequently the target of Internet security attacks. Understanding the basics of the registry can help you defend your computer against malware used to violate it.
