Computer Support Tips: Lesser Known Computer Parts Explained

Most of us are not as tech savvy as the computer support specialists we entrust with our computer repair problems.  We all know the main parts of a computer such as the CPU, hardware, software, and memory, but we’d probably be at a loss to explain what a BIOS is or how the Windows Registry works.  To help make things a little clearer, RESCUECOM’s computer support specialists offer these simple definitions of complex computer parts.

  • BIOS: Computer support and computer repair often starts with the BIOS. The Basic Input / Output System’s main job is to start up the operating system. It also acts as the interface, or connection, between the OS and the computer’s hardware. This is the reason the BIOS often plays a role in the resolution of computer repair and computer support problems: it’s the link between the computer’s essential components.

  • Motherboard: The motherboard is a significant piece of any computer. It holds the main computer memory, the microprocessor, and connections for the computer’s power supply and peripheral devices. Electricity also flows across the motherboard, powering various parts of the machine. Because of its multiple functions, and importance to the computer, the motherboard is usually one of the first things most computer repair technicians will look at when there’s a problem.

  • Windows Registry: The registry is a vital, yet little understood part of the computer, and one of the most common causes of computer repair and computer support issues. The registry tells your operating system how to run, and contains settings for all the hardware and software on your computer. This makes it very powerful and a prime target for malware and virus attacks. If you ever seek computer support for virus removal, it will likely involve the registry.

  • RAM: Perhaps not as obscure as the other items on this list, RAM – or random access memory – is just as important. When the computer is running, the operating system is loaded onto RAM, as are bits of data and applications that are currently in use. This form of internal computer support allows for faster data access and performance. Most computer support issues involving sluggish performance can be traced back to not having enough RAM.

  • Heat Sink: A heat sink is part of a computer’s cooling system. The internal components of a computer get very hot, which can lead to damage and the need for computer repair. All computers have cooling systems made up of fans and heat sinks to protect against this computer repair problem. The heat sink increases the surface area of a component, such as a motherboard, which spreads the heat out, keeping things cooler.

Many of us have had to seek out computer support or computer repair and have probably been confused by some of the terms we’ve heard.  Understanding the basics, and even a little bit more can help you understand the computer support and computer repair lingo and the needs of your specific machine.
