USB Drives As Social Statements

Within the last five years, the USB drive has transformed from an efficient data storage device into a fashion accessory.  Before USB drives became popular, computer users were compelled to carry floppy discs, CD-ROM discs or bulky portable hard drives to make information portable.  The USB flash drive made your information portable and universally-accessible.  No longer were Mac and PC users entirely at odds because one system did not recognize the medium of the other.  With USB flash drives, consumers may transport information between computers, gaming consoles and other electronic devices with a USB port.  This is especially handy, particularly in locations where Internet connections are not available or under circumstances when the physical (not transmitted) transfer of files is essential.

Just as the USB flash drive has made data storage easy, various manufacturers have found ways to make them more stylish or interesting.  USB flash drives can show off your interest in social causes, your allegiance to a major film franchise or your sense of humor.  Even more than memory capacity, the form of a USB flash drive is its selling point now.  Some of the most interesting USB flash drives currently on the market are:

The Swiss Army Knife Flash Drive.  Swiss Army knives have long been a handy tool.  They feature an iconic red handle and blades that fold out of the handle when you want to use them.  Now, there is a Swiss Army knife that includes, in lieu of some blades, a flash drive.  With capacities of 2, 4 and 8GB, the Swiss Army Knife Flash Drive takes the tool into the 21rst century.

The Thumb Flash Drive.  Show off your sense of humor with a thumb drive that is a thumb!  Currently on the market in novelty shops, there is a flash drive of a thumb is disturbingly realistic in its molding and shading.  Users who want to get the shock value of sitting with what appears to be a thumb from the knuckle to tip sticking out of their USB port will find the thumb flash drive, with its 8 GB capacity fits the bill!

Moon Chrome Swarovski-Philips USB Drive.  For classier computer users using their flash drive as a fashion accessory Swarovski and Philips teamed up to make a pendant flash drive.  Made to look exactly like a fancy crystal necklace, the Moon Chrome pendant houses a retractable USB connector that makes your jewelry into a flash drive!

The USB flash drive is both an invaluable tool and a social statement.  Think carefully before you buy your next flash drive about what the drive says about you!

It’s Not You, It’s The Internet: Sites That Check Your Connectivity!

Have you ever tried to connect to a website and wondered if your computer is to blame or if the site you are trying to reach is down?  You might spend several minutes and switch between web browsers in the attempt to find out if the site you want to go to is actually where it is supposed to be on the World Wide Web.  As with virtually everything else, there is a solution to your problem found easily on the Internet.

There are a number of Internet sites that now offer the free service of checking to see if a website you are interested in is actually active.  That is a very cool service and arguably the best of the market are:

Down For Everyone Or Just Me.  Despite the cumbersome name, Down For Everyone Or Just Me remains one of the most simple to use websites on the entire Internet.  Arriving at the main page, users are prompted to enter the website URL they want to access.  They are then directed to an answer page with a very simple answer of “It’s just you” (when the website you are looking for is actually running fine) or “It’s not just you” if the website you are looking for is not operating.  There is space for advertisements at the bottom of each results page, but no one ever seems to buy space there.  From the results page, you may enter another URL or leave the site.  This website is a very simple, very cool tool with no frills and a distinctly helpful and uncluttered format that is refreshing to find on the Internet.

Downrightnow.  With its very easy to remember name, Downrightnow is a simple and direct resource for the major social networks.  With a very clear graphic interface, Downrightnow informs you instantly of any service disruptions to Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, YouTube and other popular websites.  The only disadvantage to Downrightnow is that it only lists the major sites, but it is an invaluable tool for checking those sites and learning about service disruptions to the major Internet players.

IsUp.  IsUp.me is an exceptionally easy name to remember when you are frustrated about Internet problems.  IsUp has as simple an interface as Down For Everybody Or Just Me and is as reliable.  The no-frills approach serves IsUp very well; many of the flashier websites that check the Internet for you came up with false positives or false negatives.  IsUp might have a simple interface, but it has great accuracy!

The above sites provide a valuable, free service of checking the Internet for the websites you want to find.  Using them can help you determine if there is a glitch somewhere out on the World Wide Web or if you actually need computer repairs for your computer.  Of course, if you cannot even connect to these sites, you probably need technical support!

An Anything But Random Academic, Mads Haahr Is Brilliant And Clever!

It takes a special type of genius to create something truly and absolutely original on the Internet.  Mads Haahr is one of those truly unique individuals.  After all, Haahr is the founder and CEO of Random.org and there is nowhere like Random.org in the real world or online!

Mads Haahr is an academic who is fascinated by science fiction and is an adept computer programmer.  After a year at the University Of British Columbia as a visiting student in the Computer Science department, he returned to the University of Copenhagen to complete his Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and English.  He remained at Copenhagen through 1999 when he presented his Master’s thesis on ECO models.

Continuing his education in Computer Science, Haahr relocated to Ireland.  At Trinity College in Dublin, Haahr pursued his Doctorate in Computer Science.  It was during his tenure in the Doctorate program that Haahr founded Random.org and innovated an entirely new way to make a random number generator work.  By combining atmospheric sensors with his software, Haahr provided a program that was actually random by every possible measure.  This innovation came from a quirky view of the world that seeks to combine lines of programming with real world elements.  The fact that Haahr could make the system work illustrates his genius and the quality of his unique perspective.  In 2003, Haahr published his thesis, Supporting Mobile Computing in Object-Oriented Middleware Architectures and received his PhD in Computer Science.

Since then, Haahr has remained at Trinity College where he is gainfully employed as a lecturer.  While he continues to run Random.org, his creativity has expanded to the software industry.  As founder and CEO of Haunted Planet Studios, Mads Haahr continues to find new ways to blend software and reality.  To that end, Haunted Planet Studios created its first game using the Falkland Palace in Scotland.  By combining the physical location with satellite positioning technology, Haahr’s Haunted Planet Studios created an interactive computer game unlike any before.  Like Random.org, Haunted Planet Studios blends real world elements with computer programming to create an experience different from any that the user has experienced before.  That connection between the virtual world and reality is the brainchild of Mads Haahr.

Mads Haahr is a great example of how a person who sees the world differently may work effectively to change it.  Haahr is a computer programmer who is continually breaking down the walls between the virtual computer world and the physical world we live in.  Given how much he has accomplished in the last twenty years, it is exciting to think where he might lead us next!

The Cult of Apple – Part 4: We’re All in it Together

Apple products continue to offer their users increasingly sophisticated technologies, as well as the ability to belong to a cool and hip family. The first blog in this series discussed the role that identity formation plays in contributing to Apple’s popularity. The second explored the effects of belonging to the Apple “family.” Finally, the most recent one presented a discussion of what might be the biggest advantage that Apple products have over the competition— limited offerings. Both aspects, though, are related to either social dynamics or tech support issues. There is a third dimension at play when it comes to Apple’s success, a dimension that plays a vital role in the success of any product—marketing.

When it comes to strong and swift PR, Apple has definitely mastered the trade. The company is honest but reserved with its users. For example, when battery problems emerged after the release of the latest iPhone, the company admitted the flaw and announced plans to release a fix ASAP. Indeed, Apple’s PR practices are sometimes a little too much on the safe side, but not many people seem to mind this. Again, the fact the Apple users love the company the same way parents love their children even when they misbehave is probably part of the reason. However, beyond the PR aspect of Apple’s marketing, what makes Apple marketing so effective is the apparent lack of such marketing!

If you’ve ever been in an Apple store, then you’ve probably noticed the bright lights, the sleek counter and wall designs, and—most of all—the seemingly endless amount of Apple employees in brightly colored shirts branded with big white Apples. It often appears as though there are more workers in an Apple store than there are people. Still, no matter how many Apple workers pack the store, customers never really feel pressured to buy. Apple salespeople don’t harass everyone who walks in with attempts to upsell. The general ambiance in Apple stores is one of helpfulness and technological excitement, not mercantilism.

In fact, when you think about it, Apple has truly reinvented the philosophy of in-store sales. Apple salespeople don’t act like other salespeople—they dress in a hip and casual way; they talk and sound like technology nerds who love all things Apple; and most of all, they sincerely believe in the cause—the Apple cause that is. Apple stores are simply dripping with a sense of egalitarianism that doesn’t exist elsewhere. Apple employees treat buyers like friends, family members, and potential Apple in-laws.

By presenting its stores, its employees, and its products as those of the casual everyday man and woman, those of the general populous, Apple doesn’t need to convince consumers to adopt a new technological lifestyle or learn a new technological language; instead, Apple’s efforts are geared to show people that joining the Apple family is easy and simple for just about anyone.

Having discussed brand marketing, we’ll turn to a close industry relative in our fifth and final blog on the series—advertising.

Keep Your Mind Sharp With Isanaki Sudoku

With mental health disorders on the rise, it is no surprise that more and more people are looking to computers for solutions.  In the case of Alzheimer’s Disease and several other dementia-based illnesses, doctors frequently advocate keeping your mind active especially in advance of an affliction.  In other words, those who keep an agile mind have the best chance of preventing and coping with many forms of dementia.  To that end, many doctors recommend Sudoku and if you use your computer excessively, Isanaki Sudoku might be the best tool you can download today!

Sudoku is a number puzzle with very simple rules.  You play Sudoku in a grid of nine squares by nine squares.  In each three block by three block segment of the larger grid, you must place the digits 1 through 9.  However, you may only use each digit once per line and column.  Each board includes a random selection of digits already in the grid and you must use deductive reasoning to place all of the remaining numbers in the grid.  Sudoku promotes manipulative thinking that challenges the intellect and pleasure centers of the brain.  Moreover, because each puzzle is different, you continue to stimulate your brain each time you play.

Isanaki Sudoku is a computer-based version of Sudoku.  As freeware, the program is instantly available as long as you have an internet connection.  Isanaki Sudoku is a challenging program that provides players with the ability to select a difficulty level and it generates the boards accordingly.  Less difficult levels of Sudoku begin with more of the grid filled; more advanced players must start with fewer digits already present in the grid.  In addition to being able to generate hundreds of different Sudoku boards, the game’s publisher TGMDev provides a solution function.  This allows you to have an “answer key” for each game in case you get stuck or are playing with a child and wish to help them out.

What sets Isanaki Sudoku apart from every other Sudoku program is that it features greater game flexibility.  Isanaki Sudoku generates standard numerical Sudoku boards as well as Wordoku boards.  Wordoku boards use letters instead of numbers. If your goal is to keep your mind agile, using Isanaki Sudoku’s Wordoku function may shake up the game for you as you play more.  In addition to switching the difficulty level, playing Wordoku when the numerical version of Sudoku becomes more familiar may keep your mind agile.

The flexibility of Isanaki Sudoku is not just limited to the difficulty and style.  Unlike some Sudoku programs, Isanaki features a print function as part of its interface, making it easy to print out Sudoku grids.  The ability to print out the Sudoku grids allows you to keep stimulating your mind as you may then disconnect from your computer or play after your laptop’s battery is exhausted!

As you age, keeping your mind sharp is exceptionally important.  Isanaki Sudoku can be an integral part of keeping your mind agile and healthy.

Samantha Loveland, Set To Serve Yammer!

As 2011 came to an end, there were many corporate shakeups of note.  While the replacing of CEOs certainly garnered a lot of attention, like Meg Whitman taking over Hewlett-Packard, many other personnel shifts happened that could have a significant impact in 2012.  One of those realignments was Samantha Loveland.

Samantha Loveland left Salesforce.com in favor of a promotion to Vice President of Worldwide Customer Engagement at Yammer.  Yammer.com is a competitor of Salesforce.com and Loveland being poached represents a potentially big win for Yammer.

Before leaving Salesforce for Yammer, Samantha Loveland was a vice president for Salesforce in their division responsible for customer engagement.  There, Loveland had a proven record of bringing new business to Salesforce, which is probably why she was so attractive to the growing Yammer.  As the new Vice President of Worldwide Customer Engagement, she will have a similar responsibility in attracting new customers to Yammer.  Already, she has enthusiastically embraced Yammer and prioritized reinforcing new customers.  Loveland’s plan is to provide an immediate follow-up with new Yammer customers as soon as they have their first encounter with Yammer.  Through this, Loveland hopes to not only retain customers, but grow Yammer’s business by targeting problem areas identified by customers.

Management is nothing new to Samantha Loveland.  She worked for the Bank Of America in a management position after getting her MBA from Columbia University.  With credentials like that, it is no surprise that she has taken on the responsibilities of customer retention and engagement so fast.  While Loveland has moved into prominent new social networks, her focus remains on both business and customer service.  As a result, Loveland seldom comments on the technical aspects of the information technology companies for which she works.

Samantha Loveland is very articulate on the importance of customers in growing Yammer’s market share.  She is very enthusiastic about her promotion to vice president at Yammer and her enthusiasm is infectious.  Since joining Yammer, the company has been staffing up, which shows a lot of faith in the company’s new hire.  Yammer is ripe for growth and hiring Samantha Loveland is a key component in the company’s attempt at eroding Salesforce’s market share.

Samantha Loveland is the second high-level manager that Yammer has taken from Salesforce.  Shortly before hiring Loveland, Yammer hired David Obrand from Salesforce.  Loveland, ironically, reports to Obrand now at Yammer.  Yammer is counting on the duo to make Yammer.com the new big social enterprising platform!

The Internet And The Rise Of The Humorous Image!

The photograph has a power over us that we seldom reflect on.  Iconic photographs have taken on such profound meaning in the collective conscience from the U.S. sailor kissing a nurse at the end of World War II to the photograph of Martin Luther King Jr.’s peers pointing in the direction his shooter fled.  With the proliferation of digital cameras, online stock imagery and vast repositories of digital images online, modern photography has stopped meaning quite as much.  As a result, the Internet has pioneered the phenomenon of photo manipulation for humor.

The current generation of computer users does not seem content with the photograph and the implicit thousand words it is supposedly worth.  As a result, users have created entire communities centered on humorous manipulations of photographs where users add words to an image as a punch line of sorts.

The evolution of the humorous photo manipulation started with lolcats.  Lolcats – derived from the texting abbreviation for “Laughing Out Loud” and the common name for felines – became an underground subculture creation in 2005.  At that time, stock images of cats were shared between friends with humorous or supportive text added to them.  In 2006 when 4chan.org and Something Awful began promoting images of lolcats.  Since then, the lolcat has crossed into the mainstream.  Thousands of individuals shared pictures with grammatically incorrect but funny phrases that either refer to the cat’s actions in the photograph or represent dialogue the cat might speak.  I Can Has Cheezburger? is a site that remains active today with daily, fresh lolcats.  As a phenomenon, lolcats remains one of the most enduring.

But lolcats has evolved as the market for cat-based humor moves toward exhaustion.  The lolcats have given rise to the Internet meme phenomenon.  Internet memes are like lolcats in that they feature photographs with humorous text.  Internet memes differ in that their subjects are more than just cats.  Instead, pop culture imagery both present (like Rebecca Black) and past (Richard Nixon) is combined with text to make jokes.  These photo manipulation “strips” range from one-panel jokes to several panel strips with a punch line.  Because geek culture dominates the Internet meme phenomenon, many use more obscure references than the mainstream lolcats.  So, for example, Admiral Ackbar and his catchphrase “It’s a trap!” is the subject of many Internet memes.  Those who have not seen Return Of The Jedi many, many times are unlikely to get the full weight of the reference when it arrives as the punch line to many an Internet meme.

Internet meme’s and other photo manipulation forms of humor are seeing growth on the Internet.  The communities preoccupied with Internet memes are interested in creating and sharing humor, so they remain free sites.  If you have had a joke, but lack the artistic talent to draw well, Internet memes offer a possible avenue for you to creatively express yourself!

Samsung HDMI Adapter For Galaxy Tab Android Tablet.

Android has been dominating the handheld smartphone and tablet OS market for some time now.  Because it is such a popular operating system, manufacturers like Samsung have been quick to accessorize their tablets to accommodate the apps that Android supports.  With Cloud-based media applications on the rise, Samsung Galaxy Tab owners have been eagerly awaiting a connector that will allow them to connect their portable device with their home theater.  Galaxy Tab owners have enjoyed the convenience of Cloud streaming, but not the ability to interface with their home HDMI theater.  All of that changes with Samsung’s HDTV Adapter for the Galaxy Tab Android Tablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab HDMI Adapter is an easy-to-use device that allows users to transfer their Android-accessed Cloud-based library to any high-definition television, monitor or projector.  The Samsung Galaxy Tab HDMI Adapter features a male port designed to interface with the docking port on the Galaxy Tab.  Samsung created its own port configuration for its tablet computers like the Galaxy Tab and that port is what allows the Galaxy Tab to dock with other Samsung equipment.  Samsung’s Galaxy Tab HDMI Adapter includes a male connector that slides easily into the female docking port on the Galaxy Tab.  Like other Samsung connectors that connect to the docking port, the HDMI Adapter for Galaxy Tab clicks to lock into the port to assure connectivity.

What the connector does, then, is translate the signal coming out of the Galaxy Tab into an HDMI signal.  The connector at one end of the adapter is connected to a small converter box at the other end of the adapter.  That box has a female HDMI port.  Like many such adapters, like the equivalent adapter for Apple products, the HDMI Adapter for Galaxy Tab lacks the HDMI cable needed to connect the Adapter to a high-definition device.  In most cases, users of the Samsung HDMI Adapter for Galaxy Tab will not even need to purchase an HDMI cable to connect the adapter to your HDMI device.  If you already have a Blu-Ray player, DVD player or gaming console connected to your HDTV through the HDMI port, you already have the HDMI cable.  By simply unplugging your HDMI-connected device at the player, you have access to the connector that is still connected to the HDTV.  Simply plug your Samsung HDMI Adapter for Galaxy Tab into the HDMI cable you unplugged from the existing player or gaming console and your Android-powered device may now stream directly to your high-definition television!

It is that easy.  The Samsung HDMI Adapter for Galaxy Tab allows you to combine the convenience of streaming, Cloud-based technology with the home theater you already own!

The Cult of Apple – Part 3: Less is More

The popularity of Apple products has been skyrocketing in the past few years. New and returning Apple users stand in line for long hours, even days, in anticipation of the debut of the latest product. In fact, the Apple obsession has arguably developed into a new form. Recently, for example, over two-thousand-five-hundred fans waited in line for the opening of Apple’s latest retail outlet in Grand Central.

Though the last two blogs in this series discussed the social—perhaps even psychological—components of loyalty to the Apple brand, to claim that Apple users are attracted to the brand merely in order to form unique social identities or to gain membership into Apple’s welcoming technological family is an unfair statement that ignores the fact that Apple products are powerful, sturdy, innovative, and simply put, very cool. Even people who don’t like to admit it know that Apple products have a much stronger security infrastructure, making using them for web related activities much less threatening. People who use Apple iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks face far fewer Internet security problems. Apple technology also comes with slight but significant technical advantages like longer battery lives and rarer needs for virus removal efforts.

Still, beyond all this, the biggest advantage that Apple has over its competition is the fact that it has so few products. Yes, at first, it seems counterintuitive to attribute success to limitation in choice. In this age of intense materialism and capitalism, we have all come believe that variety means freedom, that multiplicity in smartphone models, for example, ensures something for everyone; and, most of all, that competition is good for the market. But when examined in depth, this too is a counterintuitive approach—why should we want a million different models and brands with scattered features? How is it a good thing to have one smartphone offer half of the features we want and need, but not the rest? Ideally, what we need is a smartphone (or tablet or computer, etc) that combines all our technological wants and desires. Oh wait…

Therefore, culture and identity aside, we’ve arrived at the other major component of Apple’s success—its ability to offer immensely sophisticated technology in such a simple consumer-ready package. The moment a user decides to buy Apple, he or she is practically done—there’s no need to spend endless hours researching choices. If you’ve been in a mobile phone story recently, you have probably seen the confusing and bombarding choice of smartphones! When it comes to iPhones, on the other hand, there are very few choices that you need to make—storage capacity and model generation. Occasionally you might have to choose between black and white, but that’s about it.

What makes falling in love with Apple products so easy is their simplicity. In a perfect example of “less is more,” Apple gives users everything they need in one product and takes the difficulty of deciding out of the equation.

As we approach the end of the series, we will shift back to discussing the non-technological component of Apple’s success: brand marketing. So read the entry on the 10th for the next blog in the series.

Stymie Your Friends! Confuse Computer Thieves! Increase Your Productivity! MapKeyboard Transforms Your Keyboard!

The computer keyboard is a tough device to customize.  Computer keyboards are a standard device with a standard layout.  Keyboards have remained virtually unchanged in form and function from the typewriter to the earliest computers to now.  With smartphones, tablet computers, notebook computers and virtually every display interface made in a way that offers options for customizing, the keyboard remains one of the least personal, least customizable computer devices.  MapKeyboard changes that!

MapKeyboard is a program from InchWest that is available for free (though if you find it useful, you may donate funds to them) online.  MapKeyboard is not a virtual keyboard in the physical sense, but it does essentially create a virtual keyboard within your computer.  With MapKeyboard, you may reassign the values of each keyboard keystroke.  Have you always wished that the “a” key was where the “h” key is?  With MapKeyboard installed, you can program your computer so hitting the “h” key reads as “a” to your computer!  MapKeyboard allows you to reassign all 101 keys on a standard keyboard or even eliminate keys from functioning.  If you constantly, accidentally hit the “Print Screen” key, you may use MapKeyboard to disable the key!

MapKeyboard has a surprising number of practical applications.  If you are an editor who finds yourself editing works where one or two words – like “a” or “the” – need to continually be inserted into document, you can program MapKeyboard to make any four lined-up keys spell those words!  Through such customized programming applications you may increase your productivity.

As a security measure, MapKeyboard may be absolutely invaluable.  If you are one of the many people who loathes having to change your passwords because you cannot keep track of them, MapKeyboard may allow you enhanced security.  Instead of changing your password, you can change your keyboard.  Then, even if someone knew your password, when they attempted to type it using traditional keystrokes, they would essentially be inputting gibberish.

MapKeyboard works on Windows 7, 2008 and Vista and prior versions of the program which you may find online with ease worked with Mac computers as well.  For those who want everything their own way, MapKeyboard allows you to customize your keyboard.  It is about time.
