Rising Fast, David Perlmutter Keeps Intel Growing!

In this age where the world is continually getting smaller through improved communications networks and less expensive means of transportation, it is not uncommon for multinational corporations, even those based in the United States, to have a very diverse executive portfolio.  Even Intel, the chip manufacturer based in Santa Clara, California, has executives from other countries.  This makes sense, though, as Intel has a habit of hiring from the best and brightest minds around the world.  After graduating from the Technion, Israel’s Institute of Technology, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, David Perlmutter came to work for Intel.  Now, Perlmutter is an Executive Vice President for the company, as well as the General Manager of Intel’s Architecture Group.

As General Manager of the Intel Architecture Group, David Perlmutter is responsible for determining which products Intel will develop.  Because Intel has such a massive research and development branch, the company needs an executive to determine which projects are worth pursuing and which experiments need to be retooled.  The position calls for someone who has the judgment to evaluate the state of technology and the vision to push the envelope of what is possible.  David Perlmutter is just that type of visionary.

Shortly after graduation from the Technion, Perlmutter worked hard on innovating new microprocessor designs.  His engineering talents were impressive and he innovated new designs of branch target buffers and multiprocessing cache coherency protocols which he holds the patents for!  Those developments brought David Perlmutter to the attention of Intel.  Eager for just such an inventor, Intel hired Perlmutter to head their development team.  In that role, Perlmutter designed the Intel i387 and then created the microarchitecture for the Intel Pentium processor!  David Perlmutter led the teams that fundamentally change an entire generation of microchips!

With that type of success in his portfolio, the Board promoted Perlmutter through the ranks of the research and development divisions of Intel.  He had vital roles in Intel’s microprocessor manufacture for mobile phones, allowing Intel to enter the ultra-low power handheld market.  As the natural evolution of his successes, CEO Paul Otellini promoted him once again.  As General Manager of the Intel Architecture Group, Perlmutter is responsible for overseeing all of Intel’s products from data centers to consumer electronics.

Not one to rest on his laurels, David Perlmutter shepherded Intel’s latest breakthrough, Sandy Bridge, to the forefront of Intel’s manufacturing effort.  Sandy Bridge is a microprocessor with a revolutionary new microarchitecture, said to be a leap forward much like the Pentium was.  If Sandy Bridge lives up to its potential, David Perlmutter will prove that his best days are not behind him!

What Is Right With Google+

Google+ has some real challenges to overcome as it becomes the new kid on the block of social networking sites.  Even so, Google has shown resiliency in its corporate history, so there is every reason to believe that Google+ could become the next Facebook at the top of the social network food chain.  Here is why Google+ may well succeed:

1. The social network market is dynamic.  Google+ enters the social network race exceptionally late.  Even so, the rise of Facebook and Twitter over Myspace illustrates that users have remarkably little brand loyalty to their social network.  Users have Facebook for friends and family contact, Picasa for online photo storage, and LinkedIn for professional networking.  Google+ combines all of those aspects, especially the data storage options for photo albums, all on one platform.  With over 40% of social network users belonging to 3-5 social networks, it is clear that social network enthusiasts enjoy the process of exploring new networks.

2. The Google+ interface.  The Google+ social network is based on the idea that people have several different groups or cliques to which they belong.  You make your own groups and associate your friends and acquaintances with whatever group you want.  You can watch as people move you between different groups.  The advantage is that you have the ability to compartmentalize the different people in your life and that is a clever way to run a single profile over many different interests.  The ever-changing nature of the Google+ relationship model encourages you to check in frequently.

3. The advertising.  Google+ advertising constantly during prime time this holiday season hits all of its key demographics fast, making it seem like it is an already established phenomenon.

4. A solid revenue model.  Google+ arrives on the social networking scene with its fundamental advertising revenue model in place.  Because Google’s AdSense is already in place and integrated with the Google+ platform, Google does not need to devote nearly as many resources to courting advertisers.

Google wants a piece of the social networking business, but they are coming very late with Google+.  Even so, it seems the platform has everything needed for Google to have another success in its portfolio.  Because social network users are fickle enough to constantly change their relationships, Google+ seems to have an interface that speaks directly to its target demographic.  Just as Google+ allows users to move friends among different groups the user creates, Google hopes to woo users from the other social networks.  Hopefully, it has a model to keep them there once they land on Google+!

The Most Expensive Mouse In The World! The Diamond Flower RF Mouse Is Jaw-dropping Cool!

In the vernacular of the young folks: O M G.

Just when you might think you have seen everything there is in the marketplace that could define decadence, someone pioneers some new overpriced bauble and puts to shame everything that came before.  It is hard not to have that sort of gut-wrenching, jaw-dropping reaction when you see the most expensive computer mouse in the world. That mouse is the Diamond Flower RF mouse from Pat Says Now.

Pat Says Now is a Swiss novelty mouse manufacturer.  The company also caters to high-end customers who, apparently, have far too much money to spend.  The Diamond Flower RF mouse is their premium product and currently stands as the most expensive computer mouse in the world.  The current retail price of the Diamond Flower RF mouse is $20,250.  That is not a typo: twenty thousand, two hundred fifty dollars . . . for a computer mouse.

Wow.

The Diamond Flower RF mouse is a standard computer mouse in many ways.  It is a standard RF mouse in that it is wireless and includes a receiver.  When you plug the receiver into your computer’s USB port, the mouse relays even the tiniest movements to your computer to move the cursor on your screen.  The Diamond Flower is a plug-and-play ambidextrous mouse for that works on any Windows-based computer from Windows 98 to Windows Vista.  The Diamond Flower also interfaces perfectly with all Mac computers running OS X and beyond.  The Diamond Flower features two buttons and a scroll wheel.

What, then, makes the Diamond Flower RF mouse worth over twenty thousand dollars?  First, the scroll wheel is not actually a scroll wheel.  The Diamond Flower RF mouse does not have anything as inelegant as a physical wheel that might make noise or need periodic cleaning.  Instead, Pat Says Now designed an optical sensor for the scroll wheel.  Just as the laser below the mouse precisely tracks in the place of a physical mouse ball, the optical scroll allows you to lightly pass your finger over the sensor on the top of the mouse to get on-screen movement you would expect form a scroll wheel!

The main factor driving up the price of the Diamond Flower RF mouse is the fact that the shell of the mouse is 18 carat gold.  Because you might not want to have the same vastly overpriced mouse as your other rich friends, the Diamond Flower RF mouse comes in white gold or a traditional yellow gold shell.  Embedded in the gold shell are fifty-nine diamonds.  Yes, the name “Diamond Flower” is not just for show, the Diamond Flower RF mouse features fifty-nine diamonds in the shape of a flower embedded in the shell of the mouse.

So, if you want to feel like a high roller and have enough money to buy a new car, but want to spend it on a computer mouse instead, the Diamond Flower RF mouse is for you!

Do What You Love! Frank Gibeau Sets A Great Example As The President Of EA Labels!

In the video game world, there is never truly time to relax.  Despite innovations in gaming that might create the year’s biggest entertainment phenomenon, executives at video game companies are always pushing for the next big thing.  So, even though Electronic Arts had one of the biggest video game releases of 2011 with Battlefield 3, it is already deep at work trying to dominate the market in 2012.  Leading EA Labels is Frank Gibeau.

Frank Gibeau is the President of EA Labels, the division of Electronic Arts that oversees all of the video game divisions.  Gibeau rose to the lead position of EA Labels after years of hard work with a very painful beginning.  After getting his B.S. in Business and International Relations, a stairway collapsed on Gibeau, seriously injuring him.  Gibeau broke his leg in the accident, forcing him to be immobile while his leg healed.  He recuperated at his parents’ house, playing video games.  At the time, Electronic Arts was in its infancy and they were looking to hire professional game players to test their games. Gibeau limped over and got himself a job for $10,000/year playing video games!  Gibeau’s real big break, though, came in 1999 when he was assigned to market The Sims.  With The Sims, Gibeau had a huge success for EA that brought him to the attention of the executives at EA who fostered his career.

Taking over as President in 2011, Gibeau made the successful transition from game player and marketer to corporate executive.  In addition to the exceptionally popular Battlefield 3, as President, Gibeau brought to market the very successful Dead Space 2, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, and The Sims: Medieval video games.  Gibeau saw the potential of growing social networking platforms and launched SimSocial on Facebook as well.  2011 was a very good year for EA because of Gibeau’s guidance of the company.

Gibeau ended 2011 with his biggest gamble yet, the release of the massively multi-player online role playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic.  This new video game required a massive investment of time and money on the part of EA and while the project was begun well before Gibeau took over as President, it fell to him to successfully shepherd it to market.  Competing against the exceptionally popular World Of Warcraft and the recently-successful DC Universe Online Legends, Gibeau had the dual challenges of attracting Star Wars fans who have not traditionally been video game fans to the endeavor and luring the fiercely loyal fans of the other massively multi-player online role playing to the new game.  With huge sales since December 20 when EA originally released the game, Star Wars: The Old Republic Gibeau gets to take credit for this a massive success!

Frank Gibeau has a keen marketing sense, as is evidenced by the exclusive Battlefield 3 V.I.P. kits, and the gaming credentials to lead EA Labels effectively!

The Supreme Court Upholds Privacy Rights In The Digital Age!

With all of the recent uproar about the Stop Online Piracy Act, which many criticized as a potentially disastrous free speech violation, the major media outlets largely ignored the news out of the Supreme Court in January.  However, earlier this week, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in The United States Vs. Jones, creating one of the first explicit privacy protections in the digital age.

In U.S. Vs. Jones, the Supreme Court heard arguments involving the use of a GPS tracking device against a suspect without a warrant.  The police affixed a GPS tracking device on a suspect’s vehicle without a valid warrant (law enforcement had an expired warrant executable in a location outside the jurisdiction where the GPS device was applied to the suspect’s vehicle).  On January 23, the Supreme Court ruled that applying a GPS device to an automobile without a warrant was unconstitutional.

What is most interesting about the decision is that the Supreme Court divided over the reasoning behind the ruling.  Many United States citizens forget that privacy is not a Constitutionally-protected right or freedom in the United States.  Nowhere in the United States Constitution is there an explicit protection for freedom of privacy.  While liberal Justices since the founding of the United States have argued that privacy is an implied protection under Freedom of Speech, most conservative Justices have only used property rights violations (Fourth Amendment) to take the side of pro-privacy advocates.

The majority of the Supreme Court followed that same classic argument with U.S. Vs. Jones.  What is more significant is that conservative Justice Alito wrote a concurring opinion agreeing with the ruling – that search warrants are needed to apply a GPS device to a suspect’s vehicle – but disagreeing with the reasoning.  Alito and three other Justices argued that the violation to the suspect’s property was insignificant compared to the violation of the suspect’s inherent privacy rights.  Alito’s concurrent opinion harkens back to a Supreme Court ruling in 1967 that judged – in a wiretapping case – that the Fourth Amendment is intended to protect individuals, not their property.

This is a significant ruling – especially with the concurring opinion – because technology has been developing much faster than the law.  As a result, the Supreme Court has not ruled on privacy rights for simple actions like sending and receiving e-mail, using a smartphone to take or distribute photographs or using smartphone applications to record conversations until now.  While the debate in U.S. Vs. Jones may appear to have been limited to GPS devices, the unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court is thunderous in its implications.  At this critical juncture, the Supreme Court is siding with an individual’s right to live free from government scrutiny using advanced technology.

DragonBot

Every generation hopes the future will be better for their children than it was for them.  Even with that hope, the first generation that was banking on the flying car ended up with the personal computer and the second generation raised to think the flying car was coming developed the Internet.  As two generations lament the lack of flying cars, the future is looking a little brighter for the next generation.  The hope that robots might make life easier and better for the next generation is becoming more of a real possibility because of the DragonBot.

The DragonBot is a robot, though some have diminished it by simply referring to it as a toy.  The researchers at MIT, Northeastern and Harvard who worked together to design and manufacture the DragonBot have called it an educational tool.  With a $1000 price tag, those who are likely to buy the DragonBot would probably prefer to consider it an educational tool as opposed to a toy as well!  While there have been several robotic toys or educational tools on the market in recent years, none is quite like the DragonBot.

The DragonBot is a furry, feathery robot that is over a foot tall.  It looks like a cross between an owl and a cocker spaniel.  The DragonBot is a robot that has two arms, two legs and a tail that has a limited range of motion.  In published tests so far, the DragonBot is able to move up and down and flail its arms.  So far, the little robot is also able to shake its torso.

One of the distinctive aspects of the DragonBot is that it does not have a face.  While initially this might seem horrible, the designers of the DragonBot seemed to think it was time Android lived up to its name and they designed the DragonBot to use an Android-powered smartphone as a controller.  Your Android-smartphone utilizes a special graphics program when you install the DragonBot app.   By activating the app and plugging it into the DragonBot’s head, your smartphone becomes the DragonBot’s face!  The faceplate is fully animated, so when your DragonBot emotes with eye movements or speaks, the face graphic moves!

What is most remarkable about the DragonBot is that it learns from the experience it has and from the experience of every other operating DragonBot.  The DragonBot runs using a Cloud-based program through the Android network.  As a result, when one DragonBot learns not to smack a dog in the eye, every DragonBot everywhere learns the exact same lesson!  While this might have vastly different results – one need only consider the neighbor child in Toy Story to posit that an entire generation of DragonBots might be raised to rightly fear children – the idea is a very cool one.

For those who love expensive gadgets, toys that learn and their Android smartphones, the DragonBot provides a must-have toy for children and adults alike!

Marrying Style And Technology, Andrea Jung Remains The Only Woman On Apple’s Board Of Directors!

For all of the gains in social equality and advances in technology, women still account for a staggeringly low proportion of executives in major corporations.  Samsung, for example, does not have a single woman on its Board of Directors, even for its U.S. Board!  Apple Computers was in the same boat for quite some time, though all that changed in 2008 when the company elected Andrea Jung to its Board of Directors.

Andrea Jung was the CEO and chairwoman of Avon Products, the beauty product company, when Apple elected her to its Board of Directors.  With almost a decade of experience on the Board of Directors at Avon, with various roles from President to Chief Operating Officer, Jung came to Apple Computers with a stunning portfolio of successful business experience.  Even now, Jung embodies a higher level of business ethics in her dual roles with Apple and Avon; when Avon Products found itself embroiled in allegations of bribery overseas in 2011, while Jung denied the allegations, she was quoted as taking responsibility for the actions of her subordinates who might have acted without her knowledge!  That level of corporate responsibility is refreshing.

For Apple, Andrea Jung is the chair of the compensation committee.  While Jung gained a great deal of prestige as a co-lead director of Apple’s Board, chairing the compensation committee gives her an exceptional amount of power.  As the chairperson of the compensation committee, Jung oversees the body that determines the incentive and compensation plans for all of Apple Computers!  This effectively means that Jung is the one who has the final word on all proposals that include providing executives with raises or severance packages.

One of the unique duties that Jung performs as the chair of the compensation committee is performing a review of the CEO’s performance each year!  While virtually everyone knew Steve Jobs, few knew that Andrea Jung was the one who had to rate his performance and judge how his proposals would affect the company for years to come.  Now, Jung performs the same duty on Tim Cook and has to present her findings to the full Board of Directors each year!

Few women rise to the top in the business world and the technology sector is one in which it remains especially difficult to women to break the glass ceiling.  With her proven track record of success at Avon and her fearless evaluations of corporate powerhouses like Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, it is no surprise that Andrea Jung is breaking down the gender barriers at the top of Apple!

For Marvel Comics Fans Only: Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited Is Everything You Could Want!

As the publishing industry changes with technology, it is no surprise that digital comics are becoming an important part of the lives of comic book readers everywhere.  Comic book fans have often been maligned as either being oddly illiterate (requiring pictures to actually read books) or obsessive compulsive collectors who do not even read their mint-condition books.  Digital comics confound those prejudices by giving the collectors a virtual product that allows them to enjoy the stories they love and illustrating that most comic readers are not only literate but tech savvy.  While digital comic book programs like the one from Comixology have their benefits, for readers of Marvel Comics comic books, there is no substitute for Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited.

Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited is a comprehensive premium subscription digital comic reader that has been around longer than any other mainstream digital comics program.  The Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited service is both a first-run digital publication service and the most incredible archive a Marvel Comics fan could hope for.  For $9.99/month or $59.88/year, you have access to the incredible Marvel Comics vault as well as all new comics in a digital form.

When you subscribe to the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, you get unrestricted access to the Marvel Comics vault.  Every day, Marvel adds many vintage comics to the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited collection and the stated goal from Marvel is to have every single issue of every single book Marvel Comics ever published available in a digital form in the vault.  Already, there are tens of thousands of Marvel Comics available from the service.  Each comic book in the collection is rendered as a Flash program.  As a subscriber, you may open any available comic book on your computer, smartphone or tablet computer to access read the book.  The Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited format guides you from panel to panel of each book, so you read at your own pace, but in the order the author intended you to read the book.  This format is especially helpful when reading comic books where the illustrators awkwardly arranged the panels of the book on the page; the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited format eliminates that issue!

Marvel releases new comics in the same format, so there is consistency between old and new comic books.  Marvel publishes each new comic to the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited program a few months after their initial print publication.  This, they argue, keeps the print medium relevant while still encouraging subscribers to the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited program.

With the rising costs of graphic novels and comic books, a subscription to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited may be the most cost-effective way to keep reading comic books old and new!

Get To Know The Guy Who Was Always Your MySpace Friend, Tom Anderson.

Back in the day, Myspace.com was the dominant social network on the Internet.  MySpace was cool and it was fun and it introduced most of the United States to the very concept of Internet social networks.  While everyone who ever visited MySpace might have a different perception of it or vastly different experiences on it, MySpace had one essential constant.  That constant was Tom.

Tom – Tom from MySpace, MySpace Tom, everybody’s friend Tom – is Thomas Anderson.  Thomas Anderson appeared as Tom on every single person’s MySpace page when they first signed up for an account from the creation of the site through 2010.  You remember Tom, right?  He was the one in the white shirt, smiling looking over his shoulder.  He was your first “friend” on MySpace.  He was everyone’s first friend on MySpace because Tom was the default friend.

Did you ever wonder just who Tom was, though?

Thomas Anderson was a bored genius as a child.  Deeply interested in computers, Thomas learned to hack at a young age and when he was a teenager, he was known in the hacking community by his online moniker Lord Flathead.  As Lord Flathead, Thomas hacked into Chase Manhattan Bank’s security system, which brought him to the attention of the F.B.I.  After studying at the University of California at Berkeley, he drifted for a while.  Thomas Anderson was the lead singer of the band Swank before spending an extended period in Taiwan.  When Thomas returned to the United States, he began Master’s studies in Critical Film Studies before becoming a product tester and copywriter for XDrive.

It was at XDrive that Thomas met Chris DeWolfe.  Within four years of meeting, Thomas Anderson and Chris DeWolfe would create MySpace.  While DeWolfe focused on the business end of MySpace and the pair programmed together, it was Thomas Anderson who was primarily responsible for the development of MySpace.  As a result, it was Thomas who fixed bugs and also made MySpace cool.  Promoting MySpace in the programming world, Thomas encouraged computer programmers to develop applications for the MySpace platform.  Under Thomas Anderson, MySpace became one of the most profitable Internet start-ups of all time.

Thomas Anderson remained one of the key executives of MySpace through the website’s sale to News Corp.  Thomas remained with the company until 2009, when he stepped down as President of MySpace.  Shortly thereafter, MySpace underwent massive layoffs and lost millions of users.  Without Tom, MySpace just couldn’t survive!

Now, Thomas Anderson is retired (at age 41!), though he is a prominent presence on Facebook and the emerging Google+.  You know a social network is promising when Tom shows up on it!

How Computer Modeling Is Helping To Create The City Of The Future!

One of the chief concerns of environmentalists is with the carbon footprint left by individuals and industry.  Because carbon dioxide contributes to global warming, the development of industries that reduce the expulsion of carbon into the atmosphere have been growing.  Most businesses that are serious about reducing their carbon footprint must use elaborate computer models to factor in all of the variables pertaining to their carbon emissions.  In the effort to reduce one’s carbon footprint, the chief goal is to create a carbon-neutral system.  In a carbon-neutral system, there is no net output of carbon dioxide in any of the elements pertaining to the system.  The United Arab Emirates has plans to create a new suburb of its capital, Abu Dhabi, one that is carbon neutral and the developers are using the most sophisticated computer modeling yet to design that city.

Masdar City is the planned new city proximate to Abu Dhabi and computer models of the city project it to be carbon-neutral.  The idea behind the entire project is to create a city that in no way contributes to the generation of greenhouse gasses in both its operation and construction.

To achieve this goal, the city planners designed the entire city around the carbon-neutral goal.  Masdar City will not have any cars within its borders.  By removing such a random and carbon-intensive element from the environment, the models the developers are using are much more accurate.  The solution to moving residents and visitors around Masdar City is an elegant one.  The city will run an elaborate subterranean vehicle network.  The vehicles called Personal Rapid Transit are essentially six-person pods that combine the efficiency of a subway with the independence of a taxi.  When users get inside a PRT, they will be able to designate where they want to go within the grid and the PRT takes them there.  Because batteries that harness solar energy power the Personal Rapid Transit system, they leave no carbon footprint!

Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of the Masdar City design is how the layout of the buildings, their orientation in relation to one another, is designed to cool the desert city!  The city’s designers intend for Masdar City to lower carbon emissions by reducing the need to use air conditioners.  The layout of the city was one of the key elements that computer design models helped to create.

To make Masdar City a success, the designers had to factor in an exceptional number of variables.  In addition to having years’ worth of temperature records and weather patterns programmed into the computer models, the designers had to record light patterns in the area Masdar City will occupy.  Factoring in the carbon footprint of the construction of Masdar City led the developers to strategically place trees within their model to offset those emissions.

Right now, Masdar City is little more than a sophisticated computer model.  That computer program is a blueprint for a healthier world.
