Toshiba Satellite L735-S32310 Laptop

The Toshiba Satellite L735-S32310 offers as much or more than many of the more expensive tablet and ultrabook laptop computers on the market.  With the flood of tablet computers hitting the market in the $200 to $829 range and the Toshiba Portege Z835 Ultrabook laptop boasting an online retail price of $899, it is hard for laptop computer buyers to not feel like they are being fleeced.  The Toshiba Satellite L735, in contrast, offers as much for as little as $439.83.

The Toshiba Satellite L735 boasts a 13.3” monitor with the same 1366 X 768 pixel resolution the Portege is bragging.  The Toshiba Satellite L735 has 4 GB RAM, like the most Ultrabooks, and it is unlikely users will need much computer support as the Toshiba Satellite L735 can handle most programs adequately.  Moreover, for hundreds of dollars less, users get almost four times the hard drive space.  The Toshiba Satellite L735 features a 500 GB hard drive that will store more information and programs than most users will ever need.

The big difference between the Toshiba Satellite L735 and the Ultrabook laptop computers coming on the market, ignoring the price, is the weight.  At 4.6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite L735 is hardly an anchor.  Ultrabooks and the MacBook Air advertise the benefit of being less than three pounds, but most users will find the 4.6 pounds of the Toshiba Satellite L735 to be an almost imperceptible difference in weight from the Ultrabooks, even if they are carrying their laptop computer for hours.

With its built-in camera and the DVD drive, the Toshiba Satellite L735 makes multimedia conferencing and entertainment easy and efficient.  The MacBook Air requires users to network to digitally share DVDs and CDs, whereas the Toshiba Satellite L735 allows users the simplicity of using the media they already have in their home theaters in the laptop computer.  The convenience of being able to access the media users already have without additional steps is an idea not lost on Toshiba.

Because Toshiba laptops have been on the market for years from an industry leader, as rated by the latest RESCUECOM Computer Reliability Report, it is easy to find laptop repair for the Toshiba Satellite L735 as well.  Despite the durability of the laptop computer, accidents happen.  It is much easier to bear the expense of repairing a Toshiba Satellite L735 than it is to wrestle with both the sticker shock and repair bills from the more expensive Ultrabooks.

In the current economy, thrift is cool. Status comes as much from staying connected as it does from the device one is using to connect.  The Toshiba Satellite L735-S32310 allows greater functionality than the lightweight laptop computers at a much more reasonable price.

Digital Music May Or May Not Save The Music Industry.

According to the IFPI Digital Music Report from 2011, the music industry is a 15.8 billion dollar industry.  In 2010, legal digital music downloads generated $4.6 billion.  That number, which represents 29% of the music industry, has a vast number of analysts reaching very different conclusions.  The report, which notes that the music industry suffered a 31% loss between 2004 and 2010, is enough to give audiophiles pause.

Digital music in the form of digital downloads – audio files traditionally found online – have been on the market for over fifteen years.  However, the music industry started more carefully tracking the market share of digital downloads in 2004, following the collapse of Napster.  The influence of digital music in the marketplace has only increased; since 2004 the value of the digital music market increased 1000%!

Even with the convenient access to music that digital music affords its listeners and the lower production cost digital music offers producers, the music industry has seen widespread revenue losses.  Most in the music industry want to attribute the loss of revenue to pirated digital downloads.  Trends of pirating of digital music vary with every country, but some areas with less stringent intellectual property protections contribute more to the loss of revenue from pirating.  In the UK, 76% of music obtained online in 2010 was obtained illegally.  Industry experts estimate that digital music sales would be 131% greater if all piracy ended.

But the industry analysts may be making too many stretches in blaming digital music piracy for the industry’s woes.  The Digital Music Report attributes the 12% drop in global Top 50 concert revenues to pirating.  That connection may be a false one.  There is no evidence to suggest that those who pirate music either were attending concerts before they became music pirates or are less inclined to attend concerts once they begin pirating.  A much more likely factor contributing to lower concert attendance is the global financial crisis which has left many without the disposable income to spend on attending concerts.

Moreover, the report acknowledges that at 30% of their revenues, the music industry invests more heavily than any other entertainment sector in marketing and A&R (artists and repertoire, which is essentially talent scouting and artist development).  The report and analysts are quick to blame music piracy as the overwhelming cause of 31% drop in the value of the music industry since 2004.  Again, this is a simplistic view.  In that same time frame, pop music has all but died, replaced by rap, hip-hop and R&B on most Top 40 stations.  It is just as likely that the A&R sector of the music industry radically misjudged what music customers would pay for as it is that the piracy of digital music has precipitated the loss of revenues.

New services like Google Music continue to bolster the legal propagation of digital music downloads; there is no corresponding A&R avenue to so vigorously promote new, quality artists.

Comixology.com’s Guided View Digital Comics Reader

Recently, we explored the growing phenomenon of digital comic books.  One of the coolest products for digital comic books is the Comixology Guided View digital comic reader.  Available for free through Comixology.com, the Guided View digital comic book reader is an easy-to-use application that comic book readers use to buy and read digital comic books on any or all computer devices they own.

Guided View is a reader, much like the well-known Adobe readers, but to date Guided View is exclusively for digital comic books.  Guided View has two distinct advantages other digital comic book readers do not have.  The first is that because Digital View is through Comixology and not an individual publisher, readers may easily and inexpensively purchase digital comic books from various publishers with a consistent platform.  It is a huge advantage for readers who have favorite characters from DC Comics, Marvel and the independents to not have to switch platforms or create multiple accounts just to read the comic books they love.

The other serious advantage of Guided View is that the Comixology-created platform is fully transferable.  When you create an account with Comixology.com, that account is accessible from all of your computers, smartphones or other mobile devices.  That universal account access provides you with the ability to read your digital comic books with whatever device you have on you at the time.  If your laptop computer runs out of battery power, that is not a problem!  Simply continue reading your digital comic book on your tablet computer or smartphone.  That access is a convenience that allows readers to be assured they will only pay for their digital comic book once, but have the ability to read it in perpetuity.

Guided View has two reading modes: full page and guided.  The full page reading option provides the most true comic book experience, as readers are able to see the full two-pages of panels and may easily follow the movement and depth of the panels the way the artist originally intended readers to experience it.  The full page option is ideal for larger devices, like reading the digital comic books on your widescreen television through your Internet-connected game console.

The second reading mode is the guided view option from the Guided View reader.  The guided view option transforms every digital comic book into a panel by panel movie.  Readers see a panel; they click “Forward” and Guided View slides to the next panel or does a wipe into the next panel.  The guided view is ideal for smaller devices, like reading digital comics on a smartphone.  Serious readers are likely to miss the way the artwork connects, but the simple sense of motion the guided view provides will engage children.

Guided View requires no computer support to install or operate.  Comixology is doing a real service to the environment and independent comic books by advancing digital comic books.  At the forefront with their Guided View, Comixology is undeniably cool.

The Chill Pak!

What do wild conspiracy theories and overheating laptop computers have in common?  Dean Haglund worked on both!  Dean Haglund is an actor and artist who portrayed Langley on The X-Files and its unfortunately too-short-lived spin-off The Lone Gunmen.  As Langley on the two shows, Haglund delighted geeks of all ages with the idea that bizarre theories could be reasonably pitched to otherwise professional people and that you can grow up, but you do not have to cut your hair.

Haglund is less commonly known for inventing the Chill Pak.  Almost a decade ago, Dean Haglund invented the Chill Pak and it remains a cool product (pun intended) to this day.  Like many laptop computer users, Dean Haglund spent a great deal of time on his laptop computer.  As a result, he would notice that his laptop computer’s fan would run excessively and that his computer would become physically hot to touch.  After correctly observing that the warmer his laptop computer became, the slower it ran, Haglund set to work solving the problem.

The Chill Pak was Haglund’s solution to laptop computer overheating and it is a surprisingly elegant one.  The Chill Pak is a patented mat for under your computer.  The Chill Pak comes as a mat filled with gel and when you first receive it, you need to place it in your freezer.  After about twelve hours of freezing, the Chill Pak works like an ice pack for your laptop computer.  Placed underneath your laptop computer, the Chill Pak significantly cools down your laptop computer’s internal components.  The result is that your laptop computer’s fan will not engage, so your laptop runs quieter as well as faster.  The Chill Pak operates for four hours at normal room temperature before the gel fully liquefies and needs to be refrozen.

But what about moisture in the air condensing on the Chill Pak as it heat up?  Dean Haglund thought of that!  The Chill Pak is made of a special fabric designed to absorb and wick away moisture.  As a result, the Chill Pak cools down your computer without getting it wet and necessitating laptop computer repairs!

There are a lot of solutions on the market now for cooling down your laptop computer, which was not true when Haglund invented the Chill Pak.  External laptop fans are noisy and use up a USB port on your laptop computer.  Similar crystal/gel mats do not keep laptop computers as cool for nearly as long as the Chill Pak.

Dean Haglund brought one of the first, most effective, laptop computer cooling devices to market with the Chill Pak.  The fact that it is still a relevant, functional product almost a decade since it was first released makes the Chill Pak very cool.

The Protect IP Act Puts The United States At The Forefront Of An International Quagmire.

The Internet has the capacity to be many things from an entertainment source to an off-site data storage facility to a powerful tool for education.  The Internet remains one of the most powerful resources for communication and understanding from people of all ways of life, all around the world.  But the Protect IP Act threatens that freedom, and it does so under the guise of improving Internet security to intellectual property owners.

Right now, the United States Senate is considering S. 968, the Protect IP (Intellectual Property) Act.  The Protect IP Act bolsters Internet security by creating new punishments for Internet providers who have any pirated material pass through their servers.  This means that the United States government would begin policing the Internet and making online data storage sites of material it believes are pirated inaccessible before prosecuting those accused of pirating.

The Protect IP Act empowers the United States Federal Government to punish service providers who may not know about the contents of their data storage units.  In fact, the more popular a site is, the less likely the service provider is to know about all of what is on the servers.  Given the vague language of the bill, the U.S. Government potentially becomes the biggest threat to Internet security by assuming a Big Brother type role.

But the Protect IP Act version of Big Brother comes armed.  Sites that welcome photo sharing or other online data storage are particularly vulnerable.  Hypothetically, the Protect IP Act could allow the U.S. Government to shut down Facebook because a photo a user posted infringed upon the copyright.  Given that copyright laws, data storage agreements and Internet security protocols are not uniform throughout the world, the Protect IP Act could easily force the U.S. government into a police action in a place where it has no jurisdiction.  Perhaps the Senate has forgotten that the first two “w’s” in “www” stands for “World-wide.”

For sure, Internet security is important and due vigilance must be maintained in defending intellectual property rights.  Unfortunately, the Protect IP Act is a dramatic overkill, analogous to chopping a person in half to remove a tick on their arm.  The bill commits the U.S. to wield such a large machete to the world and with such flimsy language in the bill and the lack of a reasonable way to enforce it overseas or where the data storage hardware is inaccessible or dangerous to reach, it is hard to see the passage of the bill as anything but disastrous.

Apple And BMW Are The Only Recognizable Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Supporters.

As anyone who has gone to the movies lately knows, product placement within movies has exploded in the last few years.  It is little surprise, then, that the forthcoming blockbuster Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol utilizes product placement in its advertising.  What is most striking in the trailers for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, however, is how few of the products are actually identifiable.

Both of the major trailers feature a device that looks like an iPod Touch.  However, the Apple logo is not visible and for those who look closely at such things, the controls are different.  Is Apple hoping the iPod Touch is such an instantly recognizable item in the public mind that viewers will not notice when the device on screen is not actually an iPod Touch?  Or is one of Apple’s competitors making one of the least successful product-placement bids of all time?

From the trailers, though, there are two very cool products that are clearly identifiable: the MacBook Air and the BMW i8 Concept car.

In the latest trailer, a thin, Mac laptop may be seen for several seconds.  When Ethan Hunt needs computer support he just calls Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn who delivers it on the MacBook Air.  Those who want to emulate the Impossible Missions team, though, may have to wait; the Apple website does not have the MacBook Air available in black, as it appears in the trailer.

BMW is investing big with its use of the BMW i8.  The vehicle with the distinct doors that rotate up appears prominently in the new trailer, which makes it easy to mistake it for a car commercial when flipping channels.  Mission: Impossible fans will not be able to purchase this hybrid concept car until 2014.  At that time, Mission: Impossible fans with an extra $175,000 (rumored) to spend will be able to drive like Ethan Hunt.  The rest of us will just have to gawk at it in the movie.

Ironically, the most-featured device is a giant touchscreen computer that appears in all of the trailers.  The display with distinctive handles and controls does not feature any brand names or logos and looks like a massive tablet computer.  The device is featured prominently in the advertising campaign for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but what company is promoting it remains a mystery.

One might expect Ethan Hunt to have tech gear that is custom made for him, but reason takes a back seat to commercialism for some of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Are Digital Comic Books The Future Of The Medium?

It will come as a surprise to no one that there has long been a strong connection between computers and comic books.  Since the early 1990s, artists have used  digitally-rendered, computer generated artwork to enhance their comic books.  A novelty at the time, computer artwork was used for backgrounds or conceptual points within a story.  Now, comic books and computers are intertwining in a different way through Cloud-based platforms and portable devices with extensive data storage.  Computers have become the display medium for comics through digital comic books.

Digital comic books are not new, though they have become more accessible to readers with recent advances in data storage capacity and Cloud-based storage.  Before data storage improvements, it was tough to get comic book readers to commit the hard drive space to the large files digital comic books occupied.   With Cloud technology and hard drives with greater data storage capacity, digital comics are coming into their own.

While Marvel Comics has had digital comics and a large computer support network for its users in place for years, DC Comics has been slower to adapt the technology.  With the reboot of DC Comics with their “New 52” strategy this year, DC Comics invested heavily in the digital comics market.  DC Comics sells digital comics on their “first look” nature.  New comics come out on Wednesdays and DC releases both the print and digital comic books on the same day.  Because most comic book shops do not open at 12:01 A.M. on Wednesday, digital comic readers may read the stories a few hours earlier than their friends.

As a business plan, digital comics are brilliant for both the manufacturer and the consumer.  For a limited investment in computer support personnel to transfer the printed images to a digital format, comic book publishers create a product with no materials cost.  Digital comic books replace the expense of publishing with vastly more affordable fees for data storage devices.

On the consumer end, digital comic books offer readers increased portability without risking their valuable collectible.  Collectors may keep the printed comic book in mint condition, but upload the digital comic book to enjoy the story.  Because of the Cloud-based distribution of digital comic books, readers need not have extensive data storage space to enjoy them.  Setting up the readers and apps may require some computer support to get the programs and subscriptions to run properly.

Despite the inherent benefits to the environment and the collectible value of comic books, digital comic books may not be doing a service to the medium.  The best graphic novels and comic books feature big artwork, sprawling panels that must breathe on the page.  That level of artistry is not represented well on a smartphone screen and the transitions between pages and panels may still be choppy on tablet computers.

Even so, the relationship between comic books and computers is now cemented and the future of comic books may well depend on the next technological leaps in portable electronics.

Imageworks And Green Lantern Make Computer-Generated Effects Seamless!

One of the fastest-growing jobs in the computer industry is designing and programming computer-generated special effects for movies.  CGI artists are absolutely essential computer support personnel who bring the vision a director has to life.  Sony Pictures Imageworks is a CGI company with a massive studio and data storage facility and they were responsible for the computer-generated special effects for Green Lantern.

Workers at Sony Pictures Imageworks blend the artistry of a painter with the computer programming acumen usually held by professional computer support workers.  This is not surprising; CGI artists are computer support personnel working with film to transform reality as the director captured it into something extraordinary and unreal for the final movie.  Most people remain unaware of the massive effort and the impressive data storage demands creating the final images in a movie require.

Take Green Lantern, for which five members of the Imageworks staff provided computer support through developing the elaborate designs for the fantastic locations in the movie.  Green Lantern featured over 1400 effects shots created by the Imageworks team.  The time and data storage demands on the project were extensive as so many shots required CGI.

Data storage is exceptionally important on a project like Green Lantern because of the sheer number of digitally-rendered locations, costumes, characters and devices.  Sony Pictures Imageworks needed a massive data storage capacity to turn a few two dimensional drawings of the planet OA into a fully-realized digital model.  The data storage demands of turning a digital city model into a rich, color-filled environment that looks good on a giant screen is more than most viewers understand.  While a digital download of the Green Lantern film might be 2 – 8 GB, depending on the resolution of the download, the digital construction of the images required terabytes of data storage space to develop.  As the CGI artists create additional layers – from the colorless wireframe model to the filled in model to the fully colored digital environment – more data storage space is required.

Green Lantern’s data storage and computer support needs were greater than for most superhero films because the costume Ryan Reynolds wore as Green Lantern was a digital construct as well.  Reynolds and the other actors playing members of the Green Lantern Corps wore plain bodysuits with reference dots, which Imageworks used to create digital models of the actors for the costumes.  The digital models move frame by frame with the actors as an overlay, which has to be precisely timed, colored and shaped to create the realism viewers demand.  Creating those models required serious data storage that only studios like Sony Pictures Imageworks actually have.

Moviegoers seldom think about the how much computer space special effects movies take to develop, though they certainly enjoy the results of CGI done right.  Because Sony Pictures Imageworks has incredible data storage capacity and a crack team of computer support personnel working with filmmakers on projects like Green Lantern, they are a vital part of keeping the magic in movies today.

Wolverine iPad To HDMI Connector

With the spread of Cloud-based media, the ability to transfer movies, television and other files to small, portable devices has only increased.  Smartphones are essentially tiny movie theaters now!  While tablet computers and smartphones make watching movements convenient and easy, nothing takes the place of seeing movies on the big screen, as the director intended.  Fortunately, with the proliferation of larger flat screen high-definition televisions, watching movies in big, bold displays is also easier.  The problem, for most users, is how to bridge the portable device – that has the Cloud access – and the HDTV.  For Apple products, Wolverine has the answer with the iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module.

The Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module is a remarkably simple device that allows users to transfer their Cloud-based library to any high-definition television, monitor or projector.  The Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module features a male port designed to interface with the docking port on the iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone.  That 30-pin docking port on the Apple products is one of the unique ports that Apple created for their devices with touchscreens.  Wolverine’s iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module includes a male connector that slides easily into the female docking port on the Apple product.  Like Apple connectors that connect to the docking port, the Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module clicks to lock into the port to assure connectivity.

What the connector does, then, is translate the signal coming out of the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch or iPhone into an HDMI signal.  The 30-pin connector at one end of the Module is connected to a small converter box at the Module’s other end.  That box has a female HDMI port.  What the Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module does not have is the HDMI cable needed to connect the Module to a high-definition device.  In most cases, users of the Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module will not even need to purchase an HDMI cable to connect the Module to your HDMI device.  If you already have a Blu-Ray player, DVD player or gaming console connected to your HDTV through the HDMI port, you already have the HDMI cable.  By simply unplugging your HDMI-connected device at the player, you have access to the connector that is still connected to the HDTV.  Simply plug your Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module into the HDMI cable you unplugged from the existing player or gaming console and your Apple device may now stream directly to your high-definition television!

It is that easy.  The Wolverine iPad/iPod/iPhone HDMI Module allows you to combine the convenience of streaming, Cloud-based technology with the awesome power of a full-size high-definition television or digital projector.  Finally, convenience and awe made possible by one small connector!

Track Your Steps and Monitor Sleep with Fitbit

As much as we all love getting gifts, deciding on what to get for others—well that’s a different story. If you find yourself scrambling for gift ideas, take a look at the Fitbit Ultra, the tiny device that tracks your movements and nutritional activity value during the day to help you lead a healthier lifestyle.

The Fitbit Ultra is small, slip-on device, not unlike a Bluetooth headset in appearance, that weighs less than 8 ounces and is as wide as a quarter. The device resembles a USB flash drive. In some ways, the Fitbit is a pedometer with a whole lot of computer support. When you wear it, the device keeps track of the number of steps you take, floors climbed, distance travelled, and calorie activity. Fitbit’s website states that the Tracker is roughly 95-97% accurate, having been tested on hundreds of body types.

Step counting is becoming an increasingly popular way of monitoring one’s daily movements in the hopes of leading a healthier lifestyle. Many people believe that by merely adjusting their daily routines to include small increases in activity, they can benefit in the long haul. One way Fitbit works is by reminding its user to make healthy decisions like walking instead of driving, when possible, or taking the stairs. By seeing your activity rendered into a numeric value on the Fitbit’s screen, you become more conscious of your health lifestyle and, hopefully, seek to improve it.

Another cool feature of the device is sleep monitoring. You might be wondering why this is even necessary in the first place, since we don’t really count our tossings and turnings as a good way to burn calories! In reality, though, getting a good night’s sleep is an essential component to a healthy lifestyle. Fitbit monitors the times you wake up or shift during your sleep, allowing you to better understand what affects your sleeping habits.

Fitbit can be worn or carried anywhere, but its makers suggest that it be worn somewhere on the torso. At night, you can attach the Fitbit to a special wrist strap that’s included.

Not only does Fitbit display data about your movements on its screen, but it also automatically syncs your data with Fitbit.com using the wireless base that comes with it. You don’t have to do anything manually, as the tracker syncs your data every 15 minutes when you’re within range of the base station. Online, you can monitor your data and view the analyzed results, log what you eat, and compare your progress to that of your friends.

Battery operated, the device needs charging once every four days. Fitbit Ultra sells for just under $100, and has highly positive reviews on Amazon, though a few customers aren’t too thrilled with it. Still, given the majority of responses, it looks like Fitbit is the perfect device for complementing weight loss or encouraging healthier lifestyles.
