StowThat Creates a Sharing Economy for Storage Space

Storage can be a serious pain.  Whether it’s because someone is a college student and constantly moving back and forth between school and home, or because someone has recently moved to a smaller home in a new city on temporary basis, finding adequate storage options that are affordable and convenient is often difficult.  Storage centers often end up in remote areas due to the required space, and it is not always simple to retrieve stored material from them.  This reality is why so many people choose to have friends or relatives hold items for them if they live close by to the area.  It’s easy to pick something up stored in a garage.  Now, there is a cool product named StowThat that depends on a business model where anyone with convenient, extra storage space can rent that space to those who want to avoid traditional storage units.

Cool product StowThat operates under the same model as many other startups that promote what many tech blogs call the “sharing economy”.  In this sharing economy, companies facilitate peer-to-peer transactions rather than offer an exclusive service of their own.  People that have garage space or extra storage space elsewhere can post a listing for their space on the StowThat website.  Users can then select a provider who is closest to them and get convenient storage space in someone’s garage or home.  People arrange all rentals with each other through the StowThat website, which takes a small fee out of every purchase.  Users who struggle to operate the site can get help from a cloud computer support company.

StowThat follows the lead of other peer-to-peer startups such as Uber (for cars) and AirBnB (for travel accommodations).  The idea of empowering users to be able to help each other as an alternative getting services from a major corporation has caught on with consumers.  These sharing economy startups continue to appear on the startup scene and more often than not, they end up successful.  The sharing economy concept doesn’t work for everything—services like computer tech support and home repair should always come from professional experts.  However, the peer-to-peer concept works perfectly for something as simple as storage space.  With time, StowThat will likely grow and join other successful sharing economy startups.
