SmartQuit is an App that Helps Smokers Quit

photo smartquit-is-an-app-that-helps-smokers-quit.pngStatistics state that approximately twenty percent of Americans smoke, and the most effective smoking-cessation programs only work for ten to fifteen percent of those who try them.  Even rising tobacco taxes, the fact that movies and television no longer glorify smoking, and numerous awareness campaigns teaching people about the dangers of smoking, the numbers remain relatively unchanged.  SmartQuit is an app designed to more effectively aid people who want to quit smoking.  It takes an idea many believe is far-fetched and even naïve but has shown promising results.  Rather than using nicotine or other chemicals or resorting to such things as acupuncture or hypnosis, the app uses behavioral change to lasting effect.

SmartQuit’s designers, including professionals in the medical field, based the app on the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based program, or ACT.  The app prompts users to identify what matters to them. IT also causes them to become aware of their urges to smoke and let those urges come and go without acting on them. Using this method, the user is tracking their urges rather than tracking their smokes.  People can also use the app in group therapy sessions, linking as many smokers as would like to be involved in a session with a therapist who can counsel each one at once while others offer support.  Featuring mobile tech support for iOS and Android devices, SmartQuit is with you wherever and whenever you have the urge to smoke.

The results of a randomized, controlled trial comparing smartphone-delivered ACT for smoking cessation with the National Cancer Institute’s smoking cessation app showed SmartQuit to be a great deal more effective.  It shows higher engagement and promising quit rates compared to similar apps following U.S. Clinical Practice Guidelines.  Ultimately, the app helps users develop personalized quit plans, offers tutorials that teach people to allow their cravings to fade away, and lets users upload photos of their families, favorite places, and anything else that illustrates their commitment to quitting.  Because quitting can be so difficult, users will want the aid of computer support that can work with mobile devices to avoid any interruptions to the app’s service.

According to statistics from the American Lung Association, lung cancer is responsible for more deaths in the U.S. than any other cancer, killing more people than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.  Most of these, of course, are because of smoking.  Despite having access to over 400 quit-smoking apps on the market and the federal government’s online smoking-cessation site, there is no research that proves they work, and only about ten percent of smokefree.gov users quit for more than a month.  SmartQuit, proving its efficacy as well as helping professionals and users discover what really works, could revolutionize smoking cessation for millions of people struggling to quit.
