RESCUECOM Speaks to Abe Geiger about How Shake Automates Simple Legal Agreements
Having a written agreement is always the smart way to handle any business transaction. It protects all parties involved from problems due to miscommunications or even misdeeds. However, many people don’t write up simple contracts for smaller transactions or deals because of the extra hassle it brings. Cool person in technology Abe Geiger wants to help make the creation of simple legal contracts easy for everyone with his company, Shake. RESCUECOM had the opportunity to speak to Geiger about his company and learn more about its primary product. The Shake CEO discussed the company’s goals and philosophies with RESCUECOM as well as some details about its iPhone application.
According to Geiger, Shake started out of the feeling that there was a need for legal documentation in many smaller transactions even though paying a professional to help with such documentation would not make sense financially. “We felt like smaller transactions didn’t necessitate a lawyer,” Geiger explained, “There was massive growth in the peer to peer, freelancing and small business markets, but no way to easily get viable legal contracts without paying someone.” Therefore, Geiger decided to create Shake in order to make producing simple documents like a freelancing contract quick and convenient.
When asked why he chose to make Shake a mobile app instead of an online platform, Geiger replied by saying that mobile makes more sense in many situations. “What if someone is doing business at a coffee shop or at a conference?” he said to RESCUECOM, “Mobile is becoming a necessary component of everything.”
The Shake app itself is only available for iPhone currently. The app contains many templates for basic legal contracts such as freelance and rental agreements. Shake users select the type of document they want to create and then simply fill in the details before using the phone’s touchscreen to seal the deal with a digital signature. The most popular types of contracts people use according to Geiger are freelance agreements and non-disclosure agreements. Another very popular option, according to the Shake CEO, is the “Create Your Own” feature. Geiger told RESCUECOM that the Shake team refers to this option internally as the “napkin agreement”. By choosing this option, people create their own contracts from scratch, which is helpful for businesses that already have their own documentation. They can simply paste their own text into Shake and use the app to collect digital signatures when necessary. Anyone who has trouble with Shake due to hardware problems with his or her phone should seek iPhone repair.
Geiger informed RESCUECOM that they are currently working on more versions of Shake for other platforms. The Shake CEO said that an Android mobile app, a web app and an iPad specific version of the iOS app were all in development currently at the company. If someone has any technical difficulties accessing these versions of the app once Shake releases them on their respective platforms, he or she may have a technical issue on his or her end that requires help from a tech support provider.
Towards of the end of RESCUECOM’s interview with Geiger, the Shake founder said that an important part of his company’s messaging is to remind people that “special magical language is not necessary for simple legal contracts.” While complex situations such as documentation for a lawsuit or a company buyout certainly require a lawyer’s help, simple transactions should not. “As long as there are clear terms and definitions for everyone’s responsibilities,” Geiger said, “there shouldn’t be any issues.” According to Geiger, Shake wants to both help people create simple legal contracts more easily and understand them better.
