Plickers is a Progressive Education App
There has always been a push to apply the latest technology to education because it is one of the most important thing in anyone’s life, and while policies, textbooks, and technology may change, teachers are the one constant in learning. Plickers works to empower teachers everywhere with the tools and data they need to teach better and smarter. The app’s developers created it based on a belief that teachers should not have to teach blind, data should not be overwhelming, and students should not be afraid of being wrong. Learning can be more effective when educators can measure their progress and use data as a starting point, not just an ending metric. It is different from other education apps in several regards, but mainly in that it lets teachers collect real-time assessment data without the need for student devices.
The app’s function is a relatively simple one: for questions a teacher wants to ask a classroom, each student holds up a unique card to indicate his or her answer. The teacher then scans the classroom using a smartphone to do instant checks for understanding, exit tickets, and impromptu polls, collecting immediately actionable insights. Plickers will let you assign cards to students in each class, so you might have six #1 cards assigned to six different students. Since they are not in the same class period at the same time, the app will only read the #1 card as the one individual student associated with that particular class period for the poll question. The small print of the answers and the unique shapes on each card help protect students’ privacy so they can answer a question honestly without worrying about what their peers think of their answer. If a teacher does believe his or her class would benefit from a larger print version, it is also available.
Given the nature of the app, it features mobile tech support for any iOS or Android-enabled smartphone or tablet. There are different cards sets available, varying by number of cards, font size, and cards per sheet depending on the particular needs of your class. There is no special material needed or the necessity for extra resources of any kind, and teachers can simply print out the cards on any type of paper starting with the free standard set. There is also a Live View tab of the website, giving students a designated thinking time to problem-solve before counting down to the moment they show their cards. Live View updates student results in real-time, indicating when it captures each one’s responses with a checkmark next to their names. Teachers can also choose to reveal which answers were correct with the “Show Answer” button and even review class data from the “Graph” tab. As long as teachers remember that it is important to have computer support from a company that can work with mobile devices, they will always have access to the app. With Plickers, you can focus more on teaching and less on set-up.
