Mats Horn Speaks to RESCUECOM about How Tinitell Helps Parents Monitor Kids
When talking about technology and children, many people lament how smartphones, tablets, video games and other devices have reduced kids’ time playing outdoors. Many parents would rather that their children spend time running and playing outside than using consumer technology. RESCUECOM recently spoke to Tinitell CEO and cool person in technology Mats Horn, who has created a piece of consumer technology that ironically bucks this trend. Tinitell is a piece of technology for kids that actually enables them to play outside more and for longer periods, as it makes it far easier for parents to communicate with and monitor their children. Tinitell is a cellular walkie-talkie that wraps around a child’s wrist. The device is GPS-enabled so that parents can track their children’s location as they play and it uses a one-button communication system to make it easy for children to call their parents whenever they want. Since Tinitell uses cellular signal and works like a mobile device, users can get a mobile computer repair company to fix it if their children break it in any way while playing.
Mats Horn, the founder and CEO of Tinitell, told RESCUECOM that he came up with the idea for the device when he was talking with his friend in an apartment building in Oslo, Norway. Horn’s friend was a father and was lamenting that he didn’t have a way to communicate with his young son if the boy wanted to go play outside without him. The father and son lived near the top of the apartment building and did not have their own house and yard. The son was also too young for his own cell phone. Horn decided that a simple walkie-talkie style device would fix this problem, giving the father a chance to communicate with his son easily while the boy was outside. Horn used this basic concept to work on and create Tinitell.
Horn made it clear to RESCUECOM that simplicity was key in the design of the device. People had suggested some complicated ideas to Horn in the past, such as the addition of an LED screen or a special “SOS” button for emergencies. However, Horn says he rejected these ideas because he really wanted the device to be a “one-button solution.” Kids only have to press the sole button on the device and speak the name of the person they want to talk to in order to make a call to a parent or other family member’s phone. “It isn’t even about just simplicity,” Horn explained, “It’s about shape and feel. I want people to be able to relate to the device immediately. They should be able to say ‘I understand this’ when they pick up the product.”
Parents monitor their children with Tinitell through a mobile application that is available on both Android and iOS. With the app, parents can set what names children speak into their devices to call them. They can also track their kids’ movement through GPS on the app. Any users who experience trouble downloading the mobile application should contact an Android support or iPhone support company to see what went wrong.
Horn also explained that in order for Tinitell to work properly, parents would have to insert a SIM card connected to their cellular plan. Since Tinitell does not require a significant amount of minutes for its usage, Horn recommended that parents purchase an inexpensive pre-paid plan to use with the device.
Tinitell provides an opportunity for kids to play outside more freely without parents having to worry so much. By creating an easy way to monitor young children, Horn and his team have potentially given many kids the chance to explore and play outside more frequently.
