Avalara CEO Scott McFarlane Offers Software for Automated Sales Tax Compliance

Dealing taxes and tax law compliance is a nightmare and a headache for small businesses everywhere.  Every state and county has different sales tax regulations.  It can become even more complicated when one starts to consider issues such as tax-exempt customers.  Just as companies hire business IT support services to help with complicated computer issues, they also have to hire special consultants to deal with sales tax compliance quite often.  Cool person in technology Scott McFarlane believes that there is a better way to handle sales tax compliance when running a small business.  He founded Avalara to help companies who sell products nationally to handle tax issues without headaches or unnecessary difficulties.

McFarlane’s company Avalara develops a suite of software that automates the process of complying with sales tax law.  Avalara’s software can calculate sales tax rate for anywhere in the country and make it easier to determine specific customers’ sales tax amounts.  McFarlane also provides companion software that helps with exemption management and filing returns quickly.  On their website, Avalara leaves testimonies from multiple small business owners who attempted to implement manual sales tax compliance management but who ultimately found it too complicated and difficult.  McFarlane and his team argue that Avalara’s automation is a far more efficient solution.  McFarlane’s software suite prevents business owners from worrying about having to keep up with constantly changing tax rates and regulations.  With Avalara, companies can focus on sales and productivity rather than spending too much time on tax issues.  Companies that want to integrate McFarlane’s products into their business should ensure they have good tech support services in place in the workplace to ease the transition.

Before founding Avalara, McFarlane had a decades-long career in the technology industry.  He founded his first company in college, NAS fitness systems, creating the now popular Lifecycle brand of fitness equipment. In the 1990’s, McFarlane was president of MetaInfo, which Check Point Software eventually acquired.  This cool person in technology worked at Check Point as VP of strategy and business development for six years before breaking off on his own again.  He has built Avalara into the successful company it is over the last ten years as CEO and it does not look like McFarlane is slowing down any time soon.
