Tablets: Apple Expands While LG Postpones

As Apple continues to aggressively market the iPad, one of its expected competitors has dropped from the race.

This past summer, LG announced plans to build and release a tablet device running Google’s Android OS.  LG’s Android tablet was expected to be released this year, as a competitor for the iPad.

LG announced today that will not happen.

The company’s stated reason for the delay is its desire to base its tablet on the most suitable version of Android.  Froyo, Android 2.2, is apparently not ready for prime time when it comes to tablet devices.

Google, the company behind Android, has already stated that current versions of Android are not optimized for tablets.

After consulting with Google, and reviewing Froyo’s performance in a tablet environment, LG decided to postpone their tablet device until a tablet optimized version of Android becomes available, probably early next year.

Apple meanwhile, has taken further steps to widen its lead on the slow-to-the-market competition.

Late last month Apple expanded iPad sales to all Best Buy locations, not just those featuring an Apple Store.  The company followed that up with iPad availability at Target and directly from Amazon.com.

It’s expected that Apple will add Wal-Mart to its list of retail partners soon, perhaps by the end of this year.

Apple’s expansion only serves to highlight its current advantages over the competition.  Despite some tech support and Internet security issues, the iPad remains the dominant force in the tablet market.  Increased sales opportunities with two significant brick and mortar outlets and the global reach of Amazon will only strengthen Apple’s position.

Whether any other manufacturer’s tablet will be able to cut into that dominance remains to be seen.  LG’s decision to hold off on its tablet until suitable OS is available, may give them a better chance at catching Apple in the long run.

But, for the short term, score this as another tablet victory for Apple.
