Lose It! An App That Makes Weight Loss Hip!

Entering a new year is traditionally a time of introspection, which is why so many of us make New Year’s resolutions to try to change parts of ourselves and our lives with which we are unhappy.  One of the most common New Year’s resolutions that people fail to achieve is to lose weight and keep it off.  Lose It! may help you lose weight and stick to a program if you have found it challenging to lose weight in the past.

Lose It! is an interactive weight loss website and now an application for smartphones.  Lose It! helps you monitor your diet and exercise and achieve specific weight loss goals that you set for yourself.  Unlike specialized computer devices designed for weight loss, Lose It! is a comprehensive software application that includes both personal weight loss plans and a community component.

Lose It! is a blend of a computerized weight loss journal and a social network centered on losing weight.  You may access Lose It! through the Internet or through the LoseIt! app on your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.  Once there, you will discover that LoseIt! is an all-encompassing weight loss solution.

First, LoseIt! helps you manage your weight by creating specific weight loss goals that you record within your profile.  Your profile is more like a medical file than like a profile on other social networking sites.  As a result, your profile through your LoseIt! account includes your weight loss goals, any medical conditions you need the program to take into account and your journal.  The journal function of LoseIt! is the cornerstone to using LoseIt! to lose weight.  There, you record each and every item you eat, ideally right before you consume it.  LoseIt! then factors the caloric intake of what you are eating and calculates the amount of calories you may consume for the remainder of the day.

To get the most out of LoseIt!, you have to be very vigilant with your journal records and you have to not be shamed by your computer.  Interfacing with a computer program instead of a human being may prompt you to be more realistic about both your achievements and your progress if you are serious about your weight loss goal.  Each time you exercise, you must update your LoseIt! journal as well.  By keeping accurate records and following the suggestions LoseIt makes – like “stop eating for the day!” – you have a much better chance of achieving your weight loss goal.

LoseIt! also maximizes your chance of weight loss success through its social network capability.  Because weight loss goals are so common and the challenges to losing weight are shared by so many people, LoseIt! helps dieters to network.  Through LoseIt!’s chat functions and bulletin boards, you may exchange recipes, discuss issues and make goals with other dieters.

LoseIt! truly incorporates computers and smartphones into your plan to lose weight.

The Viral Videos Worth Remembering!

Social development seldom keeps pace with the creation and spread of new technologies.  As we become smarter and more technologically adept, there have been no significant social movements that incorporate developing the human mind in a similar fashion.  Nowhere is the disparity between emerging technologies and stagnant sociological development more clear than on the Internet.  The proliferation of high-speed transfer devices in combination with immense online data storage depots in the hands of people who are often immature has led to the rise of viral Internet videos.

Never before have so many people shared so many ridiculous, pointless or disturbing images as they have within the past five years.  But for every traumatic Internet video phenomenon, there has been a gem that is worth recalling (or experiencing if you haven’t yet).  Some of the most noteworthy (and safe for work!) viral video phenomena include:

Diet Coke And Mentos Eruption.  This viral video was a remarkably simple one wherein Mentos candies were dropped into a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke.  The result was a foaming geyser caught on video that fascinated Internet video watchers in 2006.  Debate over the video’s authenticity persisted until Mythbusters illustrated the reaction.  Now, the video remains a pretty cool bit of footage.

“Debbie’s” eHarmony Video.  Rather hilariously, this seemingly-normal eHarmony dating video takes a turn for the funny when the woman describing herself breaks into tears while discussing her love of cats.  If you haven’t seen this, it is surreal and the type of uncomfortable humor that it is almost impossible to sit through with a straight face.  Even cat lovers will laugh at “Debbie” as she cries over how great she thinks cats are.

The Star Wars Kid.  It is hard not to appreciate the teenager from Quebec whose video of himself pretending to be a Jedi leaked onto the Internet.  The boy uses a golf ball retriever as if it was a lightsaber and hurls himself around as if he was in Star Wars.  This viral video became so popular that parodies of it appeared on Arrested Development and American Dad!  With millions of hits, the Star Wars kid video reassures us that it is cool to play and, when taken out of context, people look ridiculous playing.

Sam And Ren Have A Conversation.  There is a somewhat timeless quality to the video of the two seventeen-month old twins conversing with one another in their own fictional language.  The viral video had thousands of views after it appeared on YouTube and remains popular there today.

Amid thousands of ridiculous, pointless or disturbing video clips that users upload to the Internet, few become a real phenomenon that attracts real attention.  Fortunately, time weeds out the disgusting or less funny ones and leaves viewers with some enduringly interesting online videos.

Merit Software’s Reading Skill Builder

One of the greatest aspects of the United States is that the United States allows its citizens unrestricted social mobility.  There is no caste system in the United States and potential exists for every person in the United States to develop their talents and lives as they see fit.  However, because of the vast disparities in economic conditions, some citizens are born into circumstances where they cannot easily reach their potential.  In the poorest parts of the United States, Americans remain impoverished due to their poor education, especially when they have an inability to read.  Fortunately, computers may now help combat illiteracy, which is one of the leading challenges in adult education.  Merit Software is a leader in computerized literacy programs and their Reading Skill Builder is a program designed to aid adults who want to learn how to read.

The Reading Skill Builder is a web-based program for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, making it ideal for any educational institution or home.  Merit Software created an easy-to-monitor curriculum for adult education and continues to refine it with the Reading Skill Builder.

It might seem odd to teach people to read using a computer; after all, if the student can type or read on a computer monitor, they should be able to read a book, right?  Part of the theory behind the Reading Skill Builder is that most adults, by simple virtue of having lived in the world for a few decades, will have a basic knowledge of English characters.  Because most adults will recognize most letters and numbers, the graphic interface on the Reading Skill Builder focuses on combining the letters into words.  In addition to teaching basic reading skills, the Reading Skill Builder strengthens vocabulary through easy word exercises.

The Reading Skill Builder prioritizes reading comprehension.  Because the focus of this literacy program is teaching adults to read, it comes with a very stark interface.  Unlike literacy programs that promote reading for children, the Reading Skill Builder is not cluttered with a lot of imagery.  The stories the Reading Skill Builder presents are not computer-based picture books.  As a result, students must focus on the words and what they mean, as opposed to simply recognizing or inferring based on pictures associated with the story.

For teachers working with adult students, the Reading Skill Builder provides a number of tools for monitoring your students’ progress.  The Reading Skill Builder easily informs you of what your students’ problem areas are, which allows you to adapt your lessons to better educate them.  All of the tests and tools are part of the basic Reading Skill Builder.

Educators who want to use computers to help their students overcome basic literacy deficiencies will find the Reading Skill Builder invaluable.  The Reading Skill Builder from Merit Software educates adults with a mature interface that respects their dignity and desire to learn.

A Funnyman With A Social Conscience: Why You Should Know Ben Huh!

As a person who has a sharp sense of humor, it is hard to get people to take you seriously.  But when you are at the forefront of the Internet meme phenomenon, you have a real voice.  That voice belongs to Ben Huh, who is the owner of I Can Has Cheezburger, the site that made lolcats popular.  Even today, Huh is an outspoken humorist who carries a lot of business clout.

Ben Huh is Korean, but graduated from Northwestern University.  Despite having a journalism degree, Huh was most fascinated by humor.  Seeing humor as a universal concept, Huh studied Internet analytics and worked for several Internet companies before buying out I Can Has Cheezburger at the height of the lolcats phenomenon.  Incorporating the site under Cheezburger, Inc. Huh pushed the envelope of Internet humor beyond lolcats and into the Internet meme phenomenon.

Now, Cheezburger, Inc. runs fifty sites that draw an average of 375,000,000 hits per month, making it the most successful sustained Internet humor venture yet.  As the CEO of the company, Huh now wields more power than one might expect.  He has a blog wherein he talks very seriously about all of the different aspects of his life, including blogging candidly on what it was like to lose thousands of dollars of other people’s money.

With the recent controversy over the Stop Online Piracy Act debate, Ben Huh weighed in powerfully.  When the Internet registrar GoDaddy.com was associated with supporting SOPA, Ben Huh demanded the company explain itself.  When the CEO of GoDaddy asserted that the company supported SOPA, Ben Huh decided to make the company pay for supporting a bill he saw as detrimental to Freedom of Speech on the Internet.  Huh pulled all one thousand sites he and Cheezburger owned from GoDaddy, registering them instead with one of GoDaddy’s anti-SOPA rivals!  That move not only cost GoDaddy money, but it served as a model for how other businesses could dissociate themselves from GoDaddy.  The gambit was successful; GoDaddy got a new CEO and publicly went from supporting SOPA to claiming to be neutral on the bill!

Now, Ben Huh is devoting more of his time to The Moby Dick Project.  This new venture takes Huh back to his journalism roots and away from the humor that made him a subculture icon.  The Moby Dick Project seeks to unite journalists with a platform that will reignite legitimate journalism using the Internet.  If Huh’s history is any indication, this is another venture of his that is bound for success!

Internet Animation Phenomenon: Creativity Is Not Dead!

The Internet is truly a place where magic is alive.  The magic of creativity goes unstifled by the demands of studios, producers or networks, making it an ideal venue for the releases of independent animated projects.  Over the years, those pioneering new technologies and bored animators have captured the imagination of their niche audiences through the Internet.

What is most striking about the most successful animated phenomena on the Internet is how the overwhelming priority of their creators is to make something different and creative.  The most successful Internet animation phenomena have not sought to monetize the works the animators created.  That gives the creators of Internet animation a huge creative outlet that remains free to the fans.  A whole subculture in the animation industry has sprouted of animators who have never been associated with a major, commercially-successful enterprise.  Their works endure solely, purely, as their Internet animated phenomenon.  Some of the most notable are:

Salad Fingers.  Salad Fingers was a web-based animated series that David Firth produced and released in 2004 and 2005.  Firth is a British cartoonist who prioritizes message and content over a flashy style.  Firth created Salad Fingers using the relatively unsophisticated Adobe Flash for the animation.  Salad Fingers went viral in 2005 and is now the subject of extensive merchandising, like t-shirts and toys.  The original nine episodes of the crudely-drawn Salad Fingers remain free online to this day.

Joe CartoonJoe Cartoon is a decent example of how a viral animator’s work may become a gateway to more mainstream opportunities for an animator.  Joe Cartoon was the platform upon which “Gerbil In A Microwave” and “Frog In A Blender” were released.  More than simply disturbing Flash-based animations, they became a phenomenon.  “Frog In A Blender” was downloaded over 110,000,000 times before the hosting site it was on crashed!  Since then, Joe Cartoon has appeared on independent platforms, the television channel G4 and now YouTube.  Having been producing since 1998, Joe Cartoon illustrates a longevity few other Internet phenomena may claim.

Dancing Baby.  The Dancing Baby was a weird bit of animation and most fans of Ally McBeal probably had no idea of its origins.  The appearance of the Dancing Baby on Ally McBeal made the graphic, animated baby a mainstream phenomenon.  However, the programmers who originated the Dancing Baby developed the program two years prior and it was a hit on the Internet!

Because the Internet is clearly here to stay, mainstream culture is growing to accept that animated Internet phenomena are only likely to spread off the Internet and into the real world.

SYNC AppLink Makes Your Ford Into A Smartphone Booth!

The process of driving has become more difficult with the proliferation of new technologies and the distractions those technologies represent.  With the rise of the cell phone, drivers suddenly had phone calls to distract them from driving safely.  While the utterly ineffectual laws requiring hands free devices sought to curb that problem, legislators had no idea how fast the smartphone would take over.  With the smartphone beginning to dominate the mobile phone market, drivers have even more to be distracted by.  Ford Motors, however, has come up with a solution, through their SYNC system!

The Synch AppLink is a new function of the Microsoft-powered Synch platform.  Synch is essentially the operating system for the computers aboard cars from Ford Motors.  Just as Windows may run your PC, Synch runs the onboard computer on Ford vehicles.  Synch monitors your Ford’s status and provides you – and your mechanic – with clear alerts when there is a malfunction within the car.  Synch also assists you in adjusting the frills in your car, like adjusting the radio station or volume.

Now, Microsoft has enhanced the Synch system with Synch AppLink.  Synch AppLink acts as a bridge between the Synch system and your smartphone.  Because Windows occupies such a small market share of the smartphone OS market, it was impractical to create a system for Ford that exclusively interfaced with only Windows-driven smartphones.  So, Microsoft created the Synch AppLink.

The Synch AppLink allows you to access compatible applications on your smartphone through the Synch system.  After docking your smartphone with your Ford, you may give Synch voice commands.  By activating the Synch AppLink, you will be able to give voice commands to activate compatible applications on your smartphone.  If, for example, you subscribe to the Internet radio station Pandora through your smartphone, you would be able to command the Synch AppLink to open the Pandora app.  Within seconds, you would be listening to Internet-based radio streaming from your smartphone to your Ford’s speakers all using the Synch AppLink!

The Synch AppLink is adding compatibility to new programs daily.  In addition to music apps like Pandora and Stitcher, the Synch AppLink has some compatibility with Twitter.  While hands free typing may not yet be available through Synch AppLink, you may now check your Twitterfeed through the Synch AppLink!  Even as you drive away from home, you may remain connected to your friends!

With the Synch AppLink, hands free usage of smartphones is becoming easier and that should make everyone on the road happier!

Saving Finland, Saving Nokia? Stephen Elop!

Not every technology company had a great 2011.  For sure, not every CEO can be a Steve Jobs, Gee-Sung Choi, or Steve Ballmer.  For every success in big business, there has to be a company that is losing its market share and usually the person blamed when that happens is the CEO.  2011 was just that kind of year for Stephen Elop.

Stephen Elop is the CEO and President of Nokia.  Just as in politics, where a current President might well be blamed for a problem they did not cause and are not able to solve fast enough, Stephen Elop assumed the mantle of leadership at Nokia when the company was rapidly losing its market dominance in the mobile phone market.  In fact, Elop acknowledged just how bad Nokia’s position in the global smartphone market was in a now-legendary “Burning Platform” memo.  But the Board of Directors of Nokia did not put Elop in charge to simply critique the company’s problems!  Instead, Nokia, which accounts for a sizable portion of Finland’s economy, chose Stephen Elop to save the company.

Stephen Elop came to Nokia fresh from leading Microsoft’s Business Division.  During his tenure at the head of the Business Division, Elop ushered the Microsoft Office 2010 product line to market.  Before working for Microsoft, Elop worked in business executive positions for software companies Macromedia and Juniper Networks.  That Elop was attracted to those companies makes a great deal of sense.  When Stephen Elop was studying at McMaster University, he helped to lay the Ethernet cable that created one of Canada’s first Internet networks!  He graduated from McMaster University in 1986.

With all of that experience behind him, Stephen Elop leaped at the chance to run Nokia.  Despite the criticism of Nokia in his “Burning Platform” memo, Elop has worked hard in his first year as Nokia’s CEO to stop Nokia’s downslide in the international smartphone market.  As one of his first concrete acts, Elop dumped Nokia’s longtime operating system, Symbian.  In his mandate for the company, Symbian was discontinued as the operating system for Nokia smartphones.  Elop quickly partnered Nokia with Microsoft to adopt the Windows Phone 7 as the new operating system.

While it is too early to tell if Elop’s gambit will pay off for Nokia, one thing is clear.  Nokia’s former CEO, Olli–Pekka Kallasvuo, acted paralyzed while Samsung and Apple clobbered Nokia in mobile phone production and Apple and Google (with their Android OS) eroded Nokia’s smartphone OS market share.  Stephen Elop is a man of action and he represents the best chance to save Nokia!

USB Drives As Social Statements

Within the last five years, the USB drive has transformed from an efficient data storage device into a fashion accessory.  Before USB drives became popular, computer users were compelled to carry floppy discs, CD-ROM discs or bulky portable hard drives to make information portable.  The USB flash drive made your information portable and universally-accessible.  No longer were Mac and PC users entirely at odds because one system did not recognize the medium of the other.  With USB flash drives, consumers may transport information between computers, gaming consoles and other electronic devices with a USB port.  This is especially handy, particularly in locations where Internet connections are not available or under circumstances when the physical (not transmitted) transfer of files is essential.

Just as the USB flash drive has made data storage easy, various manufacturers have found ways to make them more stylish or interesting.  USB flash drives can show off your interest in social causes, your allegiance to a major film franchise or your sense of humor.  Even more than memory capacity, the form of a USB flash drive is its selling point now.  Some of the most interesting USB flash drives currently on the market are:

The Swiss Army Knife Flash Drive.  Swiss Army knives have long been a handy tool.  They feature an iconic red handle and blades that fold out of the handle when you want to use them.  Now, there is a Swiss Army knife that includes, in lieu of some blades, a flash drive.  With capacities of 2, 4 and 8GB, the Swiss Army Knife Flash Drive takes the tool into the 21rst century.

The Thumb Flash Drive.  Show off your sense of humor with a thumb drive that is a thumb!  Currently on the market in novelty shops, there is a flash drive of a thumb is disturbingly realistic in its molding and shading.  Users who want to get the shock value of sitting with what appears to be a thumb from the knuckle to tip sticking out of their USB port will find the thumb flash drive, with its 8 GB capacity fits the bill!

Moon Chrome Swarovski-Philips USB Drive.  For classier computer users using their flash drive as a fashion accessory Swarovski and Philips teamed up to make a pendant flash drive.  Made to look exactly like a fancy crystal necklace, the Moon Chrome pendant houses a retractable USB connector that makes your jewelry into a flash drive!

The USB flash drive is both an invaluable tool and a social statement.  Think carefully before you buy your next flash drive about what the drive says about you!

It’s Not You, It’s The Internet: Sites That Check Your Connectivity!

Have you ever tried to connect to a website and wondered if your computer is to blame or if the site you are trying to reach is down?  You might spend several minutes and switch between web browsers in the attempt to find out if the site you want to go to is actually where it is supposed to be on the World Wide Web.  As with virtually everything else, there is a solution to your problem found easily on the Internet.

There are a number of Internet sites that now offer the free service of checking to see if a website you are interested in is actually active.  That is a very cool service and arguably the best of the market are:

Down For Everyone Or Just Me.  Despite the cumbersome name, Down For Everyone Or Just Me remains one of the most simple to use websites on the entire Internet.  Arriving at the main page, users are prompted to enter the website URL they want to access.  They are then directed to an answer page with a very simple answer of “It’s just you” (when the website you are looking for is actually running fine) or “It’s not just you” if the website you are looking for is not operating.  There is space for advertisements at the bottom of each results page, but no one ever seems to buy space there.  From the results page, you may enter another URL or leave the site.  This website is a very simple, very cool tool with no frills and a distinctly helpful and uncluttered format that is refreshing to find on the Internet.

Downrightnow.  With its very easy to remember name, Downrightnow is a simple and direct resource for the major social networks.  With a very clear graphic interface, Downrightnow informs you instantly of any service disruptions to Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, YouTube and other popular websites.  The only disadvantage to Downrightnow is that it only lists the major sites, but it is an invaluable tool for checking those sites and learning about service disruptions to the major Internet players.

IsUp.  IsUp.me is an exceptionally easy name to remember when you are frustrated about Internet problems.  IsUp has as simple an interface as Down For Everybody Or Just Me and is as reliable.  The no-frills approach serves IsUp very well; many of the flashier websites that check the Internet for you came up with false positives or false negatives.  IsUp might have a simple interface, but it has great accuracy!

The above sites provide a valuable, free service of checking the Internet for the websites you want to find.  Using them can help you determine if there is a glitch somewhere out on the World Wide Web or if you actually need computer repairs for your computer.  Of course, if you cannot even connect to these sites, you probably need technical support!

An Anything But Random Academic, Mads Haahr Is Brilliant And Clever!

It takes a special type of genius to create something truly and absolutely original on the Internet.  Mads Haahr is one of those truly unique individuals.  After all, Haahr is the founder and CEO of Random.org and there is nowhere like Random.org in the real world or online!

Mads Haahr is an academic who is fascinated by science fiction and is an adept computer programmer.  After a year at the University Of British Columbia as a visiting student in the Computer Science department, he returned to the University of Copenhagen to complete his Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and English.  He remained at Copenhagen through 1999 when he presented his Master’s thesis on ECO models.

Continuing his education in Computer Science, Haahr relocated to Ireland.  At Trinity College in Dublin, Haahr pursued his Doctorate in Computer Science.  It was during his tenure in the Doctorate program that Haahr founded Random.org and innovated an entirely new way to make a random number generator work.  By combining atmospheric sensors with his software, Haahr provided a program that was actually random by every possible measure.  This innovation came from a quirky view of the world that seeks to combine lines of programming with real world elements.  The fact that Haahr could make the system work illustrates his genius and the quality of his unique perspective.  In 2003, Haahr published his thesis, Supporting Mobile Computing in Object-Oriented Middleware Architectures and received his PhD in Computer Science.

Since then, Haahr has remained at Trinity College where he is gainfully employed as a lecturer.  While he continues to run Random.org, his creativity has expanded to the software industry.  As founder and CEO of Haunted Planet Studios, Mads Haahr continues to find new ways to blend software and reality.  To that end, Haunted Planet Studios created its first game using the Falkland Palace in Scotland.  By combining the physical location with satellite positioning technology, Haahr’s Haunted Planet Studios created an interactive computer game unlike any before.  Like Random.org, Haunted Planet Studios blends real world elements with computer programming to create an experience different from any that the user has experienced before.  That connection between the virtual world and reality is the brainchild of Mads Haahr.

Mads Haahr is a great example of how a person who sees the world differently may work effectively to change it.  Haahr is a computer programmer who is continually breaking down the walls between the virtual computer world and the physical world we live in.  Given how much he has accomplished in the last twenty years, it is exciting to think where he might lead us next!
